The thing reads like a John Grisham novel, and he's the star of it!

Rob Sand could end up being the next Tom Harkin in ten years.

(54,408 posts)It makes one think how many of these schemes go undiscovered? How many Republican campaigns are financed with schemes like this, and no one notices? I think it is no coincidence that the Republicans in Iowa are pouring a huge amount of money to defeat Rob in this election, which does not exactly raise huge blips on the national radar. But the State Auditor of Iowa is in a position to uncover huge amounts of corruption due to the massive amount of agricultural funds that flow in and out of there. The Republican incumbent has uncovered remarkably little corruption, and considering who the bad guys are in this case, I'm sure a million dollars is pocket change to the ones that want to keep it that way. This is the first time I have given a contribution, much less a substantial one, to a candidate for State Auditor--a position which many states don't even have.

(54,408 posts)Rob is a Democrat. "My Democrat friend" as in "my lawyer friend" or "my candidate friend (which he is)." That was intentional. I speak nine languages, and English is one of them. I do not write in Republicanese unless to make a point to those who do so unintentionally.

(58,785 posts)Good luck to your "Democrat friend" Rob Sand and to Iowa. He sounds like a good one.

(146,317 posts)"My Democrat friend" is the same as "My friend who is a Democrat." It's not an error in grammar. It's merely a different way of saying the same thing.
While some use "Democrat" as an adjective in a negative way, this is not such a case.
Example: "U.S. government agency"

(3,515 posts)Democrat is a noun. It really is poor English to use nouns as if they were adjectives.
You could use a hyphen. But Democratic or democratic is the correct form of the adjective for a Democrat.
The Daily Kos explains that using Democrat as an adjective is the sign of a Republican point of view.

Nouns of attribution are a common in English and not inherently ungrammatical.

(3,515 posts)They don't conform to grammatical rules.
The Daily Kos article explains the reason that we don't use "Democrat" as an adjective and explains it very well.
There is no adjective for picnic other than picnic. That applies to all of the terms in the colloquial expressions you cite. There is an adjective for Democrat. It's Democratic. And Democratic is the proper word to use as an adjective modifying Party.
We don't say firey sale or daily trip or trainy trunnel or airplanic ticket or lettery box or textual box or peppery mill or salty shaker or tornadoish sirn or tornadoy warning or tornadic alley or hurricanic relief or disasterish relief. We could say charitable case but it would have a definitely different meaning from "charity case." A charitable case might refer to a situation in which charity had been or would be given to a third party. A "charity case" refers most often to the person who needs the charity.
There is no reason to use Democrat as an adjective other than to refer to Democrats in a condescending manner. We Democrats get to determine the language that is used to refer to us and our ideas and all associated with us.
We have the word "Democratic," that adjective for a reason.
It is insulting for people to use "Democrat" as an adjective.

(3,515 posts)a specifically right-wing pejorative use.
It is not appropriate on a Democratic website. It is, in our day, Gingrich through and through.

(297,323 posts)And, this true crime story was so well written.
For someone so smart in so many ways.. Eddie Tipton wasn't that smart where it really counted. Knowing it was against the Iowa Lottery rules for anyone to pick up the lottery winnings but the one who purchased it.. and knowing you were on video with your very distinctive voice.. come on!
I spent my 10th summer in Iowa on my grandparents' farm, so I always have soft spot for Iowa.
Mahalo, DFW.. Best of Luck to "liberated" Rob Sand in his election for state auditor.

(54,408 posts)He is EXACTLY what we need in the Midwest. Honest, decent, a true Democrat and VERY local. His home town has 8000 people, even smaller than my town when I was a kid (10,000). He knows his stuff and he knows his people. Grew up among them, looks like them, speaks their language, knows what they like, and knows what they fear. The Republicans are showering his incumbent opponent in money, and he's still holding his own. A guy like Rob must be terrifying to Republicans. Just what we need right about now!
