Female majority set to take Westchester County (NY) Board of Legislators

Women are about to take the majority of the Westchester County Board of Legislators for the first time in history.

“We’re definitely living in sort of historical times and it’s great,” said Catherine Parker, the board’s Democratic majority leader. “We really are a mosaic and represent the diversity of Westchester.”

When Legislator-elect Terry Clements takes office in the coming days, she’ll be the ninth female in the 17-member legislature. Clements will also become the fifth current African-American lawmaker, another high-water mark for Westchester.

Females make up almost 52 percent of the overall population of Westchester, according to the latest U.S. Census estimate. Parker said a new level of engagement in local politics the last two years, set in motion in part as a reaction to the policies of President Donald Trump, led many women to run for office.
