(7,725 posts)Saw one for one day around the house, then it moved on. Very very blue, until the Indigo Buntings showed up. Incredible colors. Like the jungle this time of year with the colors. Blues, yellows, reds, oranges, greens and black...incredible display in May in the USA. (Hey, that rhymed.)

(36,827 posts)I put it up in January and take it down in mid to late summer. I usually get at least one clutch and sometimes two per season.
I suspect multiple generations have returned to use the house. At any rate they are fun to watch. One of them typically stands guard over the house in an overlooking tree while the other fetches bugs.
I hadn't thought of installing a camera inside the house. I might do that next year.

Eastern Bluebirds live in open country around trees, but with little understory and sparse ground cover. Theyre most common along pastures, agricultural fields, suburban parks, backyards, and golf courses.
Food sources include insects caught on the ground are a bluebirds main food for much of the year. Major prey include caterpillars, beetles crickets, grasshoppers, and spiders. In fall and winter, bluebirds eat large amounts of fruit including mistletoe, sumac, blueberries, black cherry, tupelo, currants, wild holly, dogwood berries, hackberries, honeysuckle, bay, pokeweed, and juniper berries.
Nesting Facts:
Eastern Bluebirds put their nests in natural cavities or in nest boxes or other artificial refuges. After a male Eastern Bluebird has attracted a female to his nest site (by carrying material in and out of the hole, perching, and fluttering his wings), the female does all the nest building. She makes the nest by loosely weaving together grasses and pine needles, then lining it with fine grasses.
Clutch Size: 27 eggs
Number of Broods: 1-3 broods
Egg Length: 0.70.9 in
Incubation Period: 1119 days
Nestling Period: 1721 days
Egg Description: Pale blue or, rarely, white.
