The Nebraska Humane Society was forced to euthanize a Chihuahua after it was kicked during a domestic dispute.

Omaha police were called Tuesday night to a house near Miller Park and found the severely injured dog lying in the street, said Mark Langan, director of field operations for the Humane Society.

Witnesses told police that a 28-year-old man had kicked the dog off a retaining wall, Langan said.

Investigators rushed the dog, named Honey, to an emergency clinic, but it couldn’t be saved.

"Langan said he planned to speak with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office to determine if the dog’s death falls under a state law regarding animal abuse.

That law applies when an animal is tortured, repeatedly beaten or mutilated, and carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both."
