WASHINGTON Eight cities are in consideration to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention as the party prepares for a presidential contest that is expected to include an unusually large number of candidates.
The Democratic National Committee sent requests for proposals to eight cities last month that expressed interest in hosting the event.
The cities are: Atlanta; Denver; Houston; New York; San Francisco; Milwaukee; Miami Beach; and Birmingham.
The DNC previously sent letters to a longer list of cities to gauge their interest. Birmingham and New York City were considered in 2016, but passed over.
Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee, is eyeing several cities for its own 2020 convention, including Las Vegas and Charlotte, North Carolina, according to the Charlotte Observer.

(45,528 posts)Milwaukee could help support their local economy and let them know that Wisconsin is worth fighting for.
Atlanta could do the same if we want to grow our vote share in Georgia or the south.
Houston could help them after their hurricane damage and show that we are increasing our vote share in Texas

(10,721 posts)Georgia and Texas, like Arizona, can be turned blue. And we must not give up on Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania or Ohio.

(10,500 posts)Same goes for WI, PA and MI. And that is if the race was closer than expected. In a decisive win, which looked likely a few weeks before Election Day, we would have won other states, like Georgia and Iowa. Comey, and to a lesser extent Putin, turned that entire election upside down. And Paul Ryan did a fabulous job of carrying their water for them.

(2,897 posts)I'm sick of those hypocrites benefiting from the civic services of the urban populations that they constantly bash. Let them host folks in what they called "Real America".

(41,171 posts)If I interpreted US Census info. correctly, approx. 85% of the US population lives in urban and suburban areas now, not rural parts. Sorry folks, the way it is. The 'heartland' RW propaganda notwithstanding...

(10,500 posts)comment. Of course, I am sure it will be Milkwaukee.
The Democrats will want to "show that they've learned from the past." Which means giving the media another opportunity to lie by claiming that we ignored Wisconsin in 2016.

(7,349 posts)at the Marc Plaza Hotel in Milwaukee. He had just gotten the nomination for president at the convention held at the hotel.
My family (me, my husband, daughter 12, son 10) were going down the elevator to catch a Brewers/Oakland baseball game. Mr. Clinton got on and rode down with us to the lobby. When he found out we all had lived in Hot Springs, AR for 5 years and had just recently moved back to WI, he shook all our hands! He was very charismatic, with a dazzling smile! We were all awestruck! To remember the occasion, I asked one of the wait staff for something to remember him by....she "gave" me crystal salt and pepper shakers from his table, or so she said! Still have them!
The Brewers lost the game to the A's. My son was happy, he was a huge Mark McGuire fan!
So I vote for Milwaukee FWIW.....

(7,349 posts)We have always thought it was a convention for his nomination....guess we were wrong big time!
It was still cool to meet him in an elevator no matter what the circumstances.

(30,481 posts)Virginia, Florida and North Carolina are swings states and Georgia is becoming so. They all have high populations, and electorally, there is a good argument to put resources on the ground there.
Texas demographics are shifting too, and there may be a way to capitalize that for house, state and local races.

(6,377 posts)I think they should hold it somewhere in the upper midwest. That's part of the blue wall they need to win back in 2020, and holding the convention there could go a long way toward mobilizing those voters.

(13,305 posts)..obviously we would not want to have it in a politically and/or socially regressive city or state. But beyond that, has it ever been proven that it matters much at all electorally?

(13,305 posts)If that's factored in maybe. But if it's treated like an Olympic village and people are bussed in and then left with not much to show for it other than that week then it's not going to have an impact.
