though I'm probably thinking more of his Jack McCoy character from Law & Order.

I thought he made a good lawyer in Inherit The Wind (Clarence Darrow).

He played smart-ass tough guys and bore some resemblance to Avenatti.

but in a straight-up dramatization, rather than David v Goliath. (Avenatti really isn't the Erin Brockovich type.)

He may need a little accent coaching, though.
