@CleverTitleTK
Deep dive tk, but here is the 1910 census showing Kelly's great-grandfather Giuseppe Pedalino and his second wife Concetta. (Kelly's great-grandma died in 1898.)
He was a wagon driver.
She was illiterate and could not speak English 10 years after arrival.

Her father, a day laborer named John DeMarco had been here for 18 years.
He had not become a citizen.
He could not read, write, or speak English.

John DeMarco had been here for 47 years and was not an American citizen ("AL" . Crescenza had been here for 37 years and spoke no English.
Kelly is a hypocrite. This country was built on immigrants and has a strong economy today because of immigrants. If our ancestors came today as immigrants they would be vilified by todays GOP which would be passing laws to make their status illegal. The GOP attack on immigrants violates American values.

(779 posts)Just read the history about Trump's grandfather, who apparently was an undocumented immigrant from Germany/Bavaria who at one point was deported from his own country, also the fact that the Trumpmen (father and grandfather) were working with the mob over here, the protection racket and prostitution.Also it was said the Donald slept with a copy of Hitler's Mein Kampf by his bedside. Also
that Donald was a draftm dodger. During the Viet Nam war.

(63,221 posts)and not only learned how to speak English fluently, but my grandfather fought for us in WWI and they both worked and contributed to this country and sent their children to college, as they believed that nothing mattered more than having an education. I think Kelly is projecting the failure of his own immigrant family onto other immigrants.

(6,916 posts)My grandparents and greatgrandparents were illiterate but hard-working immigrants.
We know that personality is heritable. One reason why America has such a strong startup and can-do culture is because we've filled America with immigrants - who have more drive to start something new than many they've left behind. It's hard to leave the old country and the only ones that do it are generally poor and also hard-working and driven and dreaming of a better life.
