Solution to school shootings: "We need God back in our schools."

No, not my argument. I'm completely opposed to it, actually. But that's the conclusion of some members of the church community in Santa Fe:

Pamela Pannell's grandson would have been in the art class where witnesses said the shooting started, but he was in another room that day for Advanced Placement testing... "We need God back in our schools," she said.

Almost two decades ago, the U.S. Supreme Court told the Santa Fe Independent School District that it had to stop allowing student-led prayers at school events. It's a case that still reverberates in the community today.

<snip>

Just down the road from Pannell's church, at Calvary Crossroads Church, Pastor Del Toler told his congregation to think about that court case the next time they get a chance to vote. He said there might be a number of ways to prevent a shooting, but religion should be at the center.

"I think the church is a focal point," he said, "and I think we've gotten the cart before the horse, and we want the other things, but we don't want God... Guns helped shape America," he said. "Guns have insured our freedom. It's the heart in a man that steers him to do wrong."

where, presumably, he was actually present.

Most recently, 26 people were killed at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX. There have been many other shootings at churches and other places of worship. https://www.sltrib.com/news/nation-world/2017/11/06/a-list-of-some-us-house-of-worship-shootings-since-2012/

If God isn't stopping church shootings, why are they expecting him to prevent school shootings?

No there's a very human reason why kids are rapidly taken down en mass , murdered in their schools.

What does it mean though?

Encouraging spiritual and mystical practices, helping those less fortunate than yourself, using faith as a tool for social justice, learning about and interacting with all the faiths of the world, etc.?

Or...

Thoughtlessly murmuring form prayers to huge concrete blocks and using religion to justify the status quo?

We know which one is going to happen with Republicans at the helm.

Is God so petty as to kill people because they don't pray out loud as a group in a school?

They also taught that one could silently pray any time.

I'm confused.

explain how the Christian god, who is supposed to be all-loving, all-powerful, etc, can from the looks of things be totally indifferent to the brutal suffering of innocents. So they try to explain things with tortured accounts of “free will” and “original sin” and so on that over the centuries work less well as their god doesn’t seem to be helping with horrible suffering.
