Former NFL quarterback Sage Rosenfels on Wednesday laid waste to the leagues new policy mandating that players either stand for the national anthem before games or wait inside their locker rooms until the anthem is finished.
Writing on Twitter, the former player attacked the new NFL initiative by saying that forced patriotism is the opposite of freedom.
He also said that, while he had the utmost respect for the men and women in Americas military, peaceful protests are extremely important for us to remain a free country.
Rosenfels then dropped the hammer on the NFL itself by quoting the official U.S. flag code that was established in the 1940s.

(10,271 posts)It's the window dressing of patriotism. What the players are doing is a real expression of what that flag flies for.
But, the deplorable and their pResident got their panties in a bunch over how black (and therefore, OBVIOUSLY unamerican) all those football players were, so something just had to be done, or the snowflakes might have to melt and join the rest of us in the pot. God forbid.
These idiots are why we can't have nice things.

George W Bush actually signed a US flag with a pen & a photo was taken & the right was never outraged about that. I'm sick of their hypocritical fake outrage.

(15,539 posts)of something my sister said to me a couple days after 9/11. She said, "our government can't put together a rapid response to a terrorist attack on New York City, but our department stores are already selling red, white and blue thong underwear". She told me she had walked by a department store window and there they were in the window.
For reference sake, she lives in a large city and walks most everywhere AND she served in Viet Nam.

(4,291 posts)The Internets are replete with examples of violations of this code. Feel free to put your favorite search engine to work here.
Im waiting for someone to confront me about the fact that I dont put my hand over my heart during the playing of a former drinking melody that now serves as our national anthem. My response? Standing at attention is appropriate. Putting your hand over your left nipple displays ignorance if not disrespect: your heart is behind your sternum, not your boob (or moob, in many cases).
Oh, and the NFL owners have done just fine without my patronage (on-site or on TV) so far. Theyll just have to continue to manage without me from now on.

(4,935 posts)Everyone mentions what a difficult melody it is to sing...however, it is much easier to sing when you're loaded on whiskey.

(11,738 posts)The player had a good point. He does point out the hypocrisy of the NFL about following civic protocols. He did not "lay waste" to anything. He will be ignored except by those who support his point of view.
People have wrapped themselves in the flag literally, for decades to somehow prove their patriotism. I have always believed that patriotism is about wanting to make your country better, more just, more fair, more compassionate. I see patriots as not afraid to point out areas where the country needs to do better.
I see what the NFL is doing and what the right wingers are doing as "nationalism" or "jingoism" rather than patriotism.

(3,469 posts)From the flag code:
" The words 'flag, standard, colors, or ensign', as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America. "
Also: "The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discarded."

I also point out that the original pledge of allegiance was written by a Baptist minister.

(7,528 posts)in fact, it's quite an attractive butt. If I were the owner of it, I would certainly put it on display!
All I'm saying is that if people want to get into a discussion of ways to "desecrate" the American flag, I'm not certain putting it between the buttcheeks (whether for real or on clothing) can be considered less disrespectful. The people who scream about football players taking a knee are the ones sitting their asses on American flag couch cushions and declaring their patriotism on July 4th eating off American flag disposable plates and napkins spilling food on an American flag blanket on the ground.
I've no problem with a flag properly adorning clothing like a patch or a nice design, but if you wanna talk respect, don't sit on the flag or use it to support your genitals.

No Texan fan will forget this: In 2007, the Houston Texans trailed the Tennessee Titans 327 entering the fourth quarter. Rosenfels tied an NFL record by throwing four 4th-quarter touchdown passes, to give the Texans a 3635 lead before Rob Bironas kicked his NFL-record 8th field goal to give the Titans a 3836 win.

(82 posts)I dont have a problem with it the rule
First I don't have a problem with the players kneeling. I think the outrage is overplayed and dumb. Matter of fact, I don't even like that they play the National Anthem at sporting events. I guess I'm not patriotic.
But the outrage is real and the NFL owners as a business have a right to put rules in place to protect their business. No different than any other company. NBA has a rule in place.
