The fourth-grader at Rosehill Elementary School in Lenexa, Kansas, told FOX 4 that he was playing around with a friend in a lunch line when the unidentified teacher intercepted and pushed the two children apart, assuming they were fighting.
She told me when you turn 16 and the police shoot you, the only person you can be mad at is yourself, he said.
Malachi said the comment made him cry. His father was shot and killed in Kansas City when he was just an infant.

(204 posts)My understanding is that this was a label for oblivious and uncaring white people. For example, those that would be more willing to help a hurt dog than make justice reform a priority, but NOT necessarily overt racist bigots.

(204 posts)plus I thought the entire point of the term was to identify people who seemed to have a massive disconnect from their personal feelings they are a good person (I love dogs!) from their true non-holistic nature (I'd save a drowning dog before a person)

(11,738 posts)There are so many ways that teacher could have responded. "Hey guys, it isn't a good idea to mess around like that, someone can get hurt, or angry, and then things get out of control and people get into trouble." OR "Hey, I really need you guys to focus so that everyone can get their lunch and enjoy their time".
That teacher needs to (or better yet, the principal needs to) ask what message they were trying to send with the stupid comment.

(16,804 posts)I know of one....kid is just out of control.
Know the kids special ed teacher.
elementary
kid hitting others, throwing books, screaming and running down the halls...parents shrug
calling teachers names, swinging at teachers....disciplinary file literally an inch thick....I have seen it...have not read anything in it.....expulsion proceedings are underway but central office admin has added a delay so the kid is literally saved by the bell.
Appears expulsion has lots of paperwork and maybe the kid will move over the summer.....
this kid is just getting bigger, stronger and meaner
mainstream does not always work....

(22,336 posts)They were just goofing off during class, which happens. I've done a great deal of substitute teaching, and we get tons of this. There are tons of ways to handle this kind of thing.
Are you saying this was acceptable? What do you think should be done? And do you know any teachers?
dembotoz
(16,804 posts)Yep children, out of control children...
gollygee
(22,336 posts)You do know teachers? If so, have you talked to them about whether it's OK for teachers to say this to kids?

(16,804 posts)Do you deal with those...they put the safety of themselves and others at risk...

(22,336 posts)I don't tell them they'll deserve it when they get shot in a few years.

(16,804 posts)again do some kids warrant expulsion
gollygee
(22,336 posts)And even kids who warrant expulsion shouldn't be spoken to like this. They are still children and human beings. There is NO excuse for anyone saying this to a child. I don't care what the child did.

(22,336 posts)What the heck? I don't care if he's honest or deserves expulsion - he still shouldn't be talked to like that.
And that's a huge jump you're making. You seem to think there's some likelihood that he deserves expulsion when there's nothing like that said anywhere, and what is said is that he did something incredibly common - goof off in a lunch line. That is so common that it happens in pretty much every line unless you keep the kids engaged somehow. Kids don't often do something so bad to require expulsion - especially kids that young - but kids that young routinely goof off while standing in lines. Why are you trying to turn this into something bigger than it appears to be?

(16,804 posts)smash a chair over a kids head? is that goofing off?
love how you throw the teacher under the bus without any facts...guess that is why we used to have unions
gollygee
(22,336 posts)The teacher wouldn't have gotten between kids throwing around chairs so that obviously isn't what happened. Teachers call the office when there's violence.
Kids play games when in line, and games between 9-year-old boys are like games between puppies. There's sometimes light pushing, so I can imagine a teacher thinking it might be a fight - or the start of one anyway - and getting between them. That is reasonable. Making them get out of line and go to the back and wait at the end of the line for lunch rather than the middle would be reasonable too. What the teacher said is not reasonable.

You understand she probably knew about the kid's Dad right...you can't talk to a student like that...it is just wrong...she should be fired after due process. I would also add she should not set foot in the classroom until the due process is over and hopefully she is fired. Teaching is a tough job, some can't cut it.

(61,695 posts)with your personal anecdote? They aren't the same. These are kids being kids. They were in an environment with nomimal structure, so they start acting like little boys. Not anything like the special needs situation in your anecdote.

(68,576 posts)you never taught. I went into business in Georgia as teaching there was a akin to child abuse...I never resorted to verbal abuse or any other sort of abuse...and I still get letters from my kids (and some friend me on facebook)...of course not everyone is cut out for teaching...which may include your 'friends'. I don't deny it is a hard job... so do it well are get another damn job. But let's not torture little kids as this poor excuse for a teacher allegedly did with her cruel comments.
Demsrule86
(68,576 posts)hearsay from your 'friends' who tell you inner city kids ( mostly Black) are monsters? There are some tough kids out there no doubt. And maybe your 'friends' need to seek new employment if they can't handle the job. I am 5 foot three and weigh 120 lbs...and somehow I managed to control high school kids...and this kid was younger.
dembotoz
(16,804 posts)my point of reference is a totally out of control kid who should not be in a school setting....not safe for the other kids...and yet the kid remains......
you automatically believe the kid...i am not so fast
perhaps it is good you got out of education
and by the way the phones have been out for most of the year.....at least to parts of the school....

(22,336 posts)it could be used for white people who are overtly racist or who are unconsciously racist. Lots of times for people who aren't aware they are racist, but I bet if you asked this teacher they'd be incredulous at the suggestion anyone would consider them racist.
