Police official accidentally debunks Trumps MS-13 rant with a single stat
The president would have you believe Long Island is a war zone. It isn't.

President Trump held a roundtable discussion about MS-13 in Suffolk County, New York on Wednesday in which he used super-heated rhetoric to emphasize the threat that gang members and by extension, undocumented immigrants purportedly pose.
At one point, Trump claimed that people who live on Long Island cant walk outside because you have gang members that are so rough that people are afraid to leave their homes.
Its almost like a war where youre getting rid of somebody that is occupying your nation, Trump said. And for me to go through and be in this position, and see towns that Ive known all my life I grew here here, I know every one of the towns and its unthinkable that its almost like an occupied territory where your children are afraid to go out, and in many cases if they go out, bad things happen.

But roughly 45 minutes in to Wednesdays roundtable event, the hyperbole of Trumps fear-mongering was accidentally exposed by Suffolk County police commissioner Geraldine Hart, who noted that there hasnt been an MS-13-linked homicide in Suffolk County in more than a year.
Trump didnt directly respond to Harts statistic, but instead described individual crimes committed by alleged MS-13 members in grisly detail.

While Trump would have you believe Long Island is a battle zone, crime statistics dont back him up. According to the Washington Post, there were 37 homicides in all of Nassau and Suffolk counties in 2017 the entirety of Long Island east of New York City. That total was down from 59 the year before. The counties are home to 2.8 million people.

(13,903 posts)5. Besides, disagreement is a sign of diversity. Ur-Fascism grows up and seeks for consensus by exploiting and exacerbating the natural fear of difference. The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.
13. Ur-Fascism is based upon a selective populism, a qualitative populism, one might say. In a democracy, the citizens have individual rights, but the citizens in their entirety have a political impact only from a quantitative point of viewone follows the decisions of the majority. For Ur-Fascism, however, individuals as individuals have no rights, and the People is conceived as a quality, a monolithic entity expressing the Common Will. Since no large quantity of human beings can have a common will, the Leader pretends to be their interpreter. Having lost their power of delegation, citizens do not act; they are only called on to play the role of the People. Thus the People is only a theatrical fiction. To have a good instance of qualitative populism we no longer need the Piazza Venezia in Rome or the Nuremberg Stadium. There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.
Because of its qualitative populism Ur-Fascism must be against rotten parliamentary governments. One of the first sentences uttered by Mussolini in the Italian parliament was I could have transformed this deaf and gloomy place into a bivouac for my maniplesmaniples being a subdivision of the traditional Roman legion. As a matter of fact, he immediately found better housing for his maniples, but a little later he liquidated the parliament. Wherever a politician casts doubt on the legitimacy of a parliament because it no longer represents the Voice of the People, we can smell Ur-Fascism.

(19,201 posts)it's only because of Donald Trump's "get tough" attitude.
You know that meme is coming down the pike sooner or later. Trump always wants things both ways at the same time.

(11,175 posts)No one on Long Island ever leaves their homes after dark. Well, no one except the gang members, that is. They have total control of the streets throughout both counties. They roam around looking for murder victims, but they're thwarted, because everyone is inside behind locked doors.
As sunset approaches each day, you see people scurrying around the supermarkets, stocking up. They know they can't go shopping or go to a restaurant or order a pizza, so they have to make sure they have enough food to last to the next morning.
I don't blame you for not knowing this. The MSM are hushing it up. They won't report anything that would prove Trump right.

(19,201 posts)that MS-13 gang members are so hungry for murder that they've taken to killing each other, just to stay in practice. That's what some people say, honest!
