(5,210 posts)Do you really think there's any comparison between Trump and any of these other people? Trump, the man who can't STOP lying? Trump, the dictator-wannabe? Trump, the man who breaks the law and thumbs his nose at the Constitution daily? We had a lot of problems with George W. Bush and his various advisors and such, but Bush was nothing like this monster.
Besides, you're missing the point. It's not that Conservatives who are speaking out against Trump get instant forgiveness for all their faults and failings, or suddenly earn 100% approval for all they are, think and do -- just that what they have to say on the issue of Trump and preserving our democracy is worth praising. It's the old "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" strategy.

(11,567 posts)As my father used to say "All contributions gratefully received," and it's just like that. ANYthing (OK, almost anything) that gets some sunshine and fresh air into the WH is welcome.
It's not like I would suddenly forgive and forget all the "contributions" Friedman and his feckless ilk have offered up over the years, but in this instance, at least, I would definitely lengthen his lead and let him run with it.

(5,210 posts)I'm willing to COMPLETELY forget all that from the past -- for now. And we'll see how things go once we're over this existential national threat.

(5,106 posts)(remember toward the end when he started ignoring what the Dickster wanted and really ticked him off?). Just one thing in his favor: He is not VILE in every possible way imaginable as is Trump, who is the entire reason Bush II has gained more respect lately.

(5,210 posts)Here's the deal. WE ARE IN A NATIONAL EMERGENCY. We can't afford to try to silence or keep OUT the very voices that are needed if we're to get through this. Grudges are counterproductive in such a situation.
As one pair of Conservative-Liberal Tweeters puts it: we look forward to the time we can go back to arguing about policy.
Let's right the ship, THEN we can worry about re-arranging the deck chairs, or who belongs in them and who doesn't.

(7,220 posts)I hear so many people bitch and moan about Steve Schmidt, Nicole Wallace, David Frum etc. because they're republicans. Well, even they can see the frog is boiling, and are willing so say so. Hell, even shitbags like Bill Kristol and George Will are getting on the "Trump is dangerous and insane" train. It's blind madness not to realize we're all Americans, and want to remain so, despite our considerable differences.
We can all go back to fighting about politics when the emergency is over. But it's looking more likely with each passing month that our democratic norms are being eroded faster than arctic glaciers that may or may not be related to global warming. (Let them say it's maybe because of rocks for the moment. We're not conceding their horseshit about rising sea levels being due to rocks, or any other such nonsense, now or ever.) We just want to have an actual democracy.

(81,500 posts)And conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin, too. When George I hate all things liberal Will is excoriating the home team, you KNOW somethings flipping.
Jennifer Rubin stated, flat out, that Democrats need to take back at least one chamber of Congress to build the guardrails back up against trump. She said that on MSNBC last night. She really talked that up. She urged voters to flip at least one. She specifically stated that this HAS TO happen because her own party insists on doing nothing.
Thats something I never would have expected. She put a shiv in the back of her own party-of-preference. She called out both Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell for absolute cowardice. Steve Schmidt is already there, too, and gets more forceful about this by the day.

(19,204 posts)are history now. They have absolutely no say in the 'Party of Trump'. They're dinosaurs, and no Trump cultist will listen to a thing they say. The old GOP is dead. The new racist, xenophobic, white supremacist Trump Party listens to no one but their cult leader.
Actually George Will, Rubin, Kristol et al. were the creators of the Party of Trump. They blew their racist, xenophobic, class warfare dog whistles for decades, never thinking one of them would ever use those issues as their platform for office of the president. The deplorables welcomed an overt racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, rude asshole, instead of having another one continue to blow the dog whistles at them. They wanted to fully participate in these crude, rude, hateful politics for once instead of having to hide in the background. And then came Donald Trump (Putin and all) and they were elated!
Of course I don't have to tell you any of this, calimary. You know full well the reasons for Trump's popularity. What we all didn't count on was a foreign country waging a propaganda war (and perhaps a ballot war as well) turning public opinion against a very solid Democratic candidate.

(9,177 posts)There is only the Trump party now, and if you oppose it...i.e. are sane...then you'd better start voting in Democrats so the orange criminal lunatic can be thrown out of office.

I value all their contributions -- and every time it's Max Boot I find myself applauding, I gag a little. But DAMN, he's got some great things to say.
And don't forget David Frum. Also very insightful and vocal, tho perhaps not quite to the decibel level as this Friedman quote.

And, isn't Kristol one of the people behind those TV ads about protecting Robert Mueller?

(49,409 posts)I haven't seen the ad about Mueller, but Kristol has been calling out Trump as hard as anyone. I haven't yet seen him go as far as calling for the election of Democrats to congress.

Agree 100%. This country is staring into the abyss and we can continue the policy fights if and when our democracy is saved, because it's in grave danger from Republican politicians. All of them.

(4,292 posts)Run for the House or Senate as a Democrat.
In places like Orange County CA, having a deep slate of Democratic candidates works against us because of the election laws there. The two strongest candidates in the primary face off in the general election. Regardless of political affiliation. One possible outcome is to have two RepubliCON candidates for the House seat in November. (If this assertion is incorrect, please correct me).
We need to carefully select and offer unwavering support to the best (and most likely electable) Democrats. Period.
Ive seen a FB post suggesting that a third party be formed. As if there arent enough splinter parties already. This isnt a western European republic where a coalition government is a practical option. And it wouldnt surprise me if this idea is being secretly promoted by Reich-wing plutocrats (Koch-suckers and Mercer-naries in particular) to undercut the Blue Wave/Tsunami.
Focus. Eyes on the prize: regaining the House and Senate this November.
Get out the vote. Fight disenfranchisement, one voter at a time, if necessary. And it is necessary for us to win.
