Fox News writer: the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a
cannon
This is not the Onion.
Allison Barrie, a defense specialist, profiled the BCB Wall Breaker, which uses air pressure to fire objects, for Fox News:
Fired from this amazing cannon, ordinary water bottles become powerful tools to save the lives of children in active shooter school attacks.
Imagine students barricaded in classrooms with no way to escape. The shooter is roaming the hallways. The only exit is the door to the hallway. If students tried to escape via the hallway, they could be greatly at risk.
Outside the school building, police could roll up these water cannons and quickly punch holes in the walls of every classroom providing large escape holes.
If students have been wounded, first responders can use the hole to accelerate access to medical care.
In both these instances, escape and medical care for wounded, seconds are vital and can mean the difference between life and death.

(13,079 posts)We can't do the obvious and ban gunz, so what we need to do is use artillery to shell a school whenever there is concern that some idiot gunner has gone rogue again.
underpants
(182,843 posts)Oh yeah there's that. So the police "roll up" and don't actually go into the school but instead unload these cannons (assuming the cannons are permanently in place) load them with water bottles and go BLAM! BLAM! in EVERY CLASSROOM

(7,530 posts)Hey wait...how about this:
Every school has a bear in a cage in a central location in the school.
When there's an active shooter situation, they release the bear.
The bear will eat the gunman, problem solved.
Turbineguy
(37,355 posts)The NRA would never agree to an unarmed bear. It's in the Second Amendment!
What happens to the debris of broken bricks, metal studs, screws, sheetrock etc after this amazing cannon blows open the hole?
Geez these people are stupid.
The police are firing high velocity projectiles INTO the school. What could possibly go wrong?

(53,061 posts)Every school wall could have the charges built into the wall and a big button so that any student could push it and blow a hole with the blast going out.
Much better.
Really what could possibly go wrong?

(7,300 posts)This is an excellent idea. The only Improvement I could think of is having a button on every desk.
grantcart
(53,061 posts)You would want just one button on one kids desk as the teacher would have her hands steadying her government issued Uzi.
This student who would be the official "Explosives Monitor" should be the child most experienced in explosives in their spare time.
My next door friend Carl and I would have been perfect for it because we would spend hours every day building cities in our back yard and then blow them apart along with our Tokin trucks using fire crackers we stole during the 4th.
The button idea is a keeper because Carl only had 3 fingers after the third grade.
tazkcmo
(7,300 posts)We did the same thing. We also would douse our sisters Barbie dolls in lighter fluid and then put them on the Evel Knievel motorcycle that had the air power launch pad, light them and send them flaming down the street. It was awesome especially at night.
Good ol three-finger Carl. A man for all ages.

(21,582 posts)in school strategy is nothing more than an attempt to mitigate a tragedy but it will never prevent a tragedy. the only thing that does that is making sure the shooter never gets to the school armed in the first place

(31,261 posts)The last two kids had conventional guns, but even with that, the kid in Texas killed 8 people. If either kid has and knew how to use an assault weapon, the body count at both shootings would have been massive.
I would guess that even gun nut parents are keeping assault weapons from their kids (at least until the fear of having their drawers sued off abates). But there is always going to be at least one parent who trusts little Joey, who they trained to be a marksman and a wiz with an assault weapon, during extensive training at the firing range.

(31,261 posts)I don't know whether you noticed, NONE of the blocks were connected by cement. The momentum dynamics change drastically once cement is added to the equation, then the size and release speed of shrapnel changes fairly dramatically.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)However, I agree that those "walls" do not represent an actual building wall. Those little test walls did not have any rebar, and they didn't have the weight of a roof providing down pressure. No one would build a wall like that for an actual building (unless they wanted it to collapse).

(7,300 posts)These are faulty tests. Walls are not built like that. There are studs, wiring, insulation, pumbing, ductwork and rebarb.
And sometimes dead frogs from mischievous construction workers. Not that I'm speaking from experience. Honestly.

(7,399 posts)how many. So the training is to hide in place until it's over. Why escape through a hole in the wall when you don't even know for sure how many shooters there are?
This is just dumb crap.
I have been wondering how long it will be until the shooters start adopting the old terrorist tactic of a secondary attack as first responders show up. Hope they don't.

(31,261 posts)A kid who has an assault weapon would have turned the school into a large graveyard. We can't keep counting on those things jamming to lower the body count, murderers will figure out to not let them jam.

(22,976 posts)There should be a water cannon in every classroom in America, including its territories.
And how long before an innocent-but-inquisitive human decides to screw around with an H2O cannon?
