Melanie to attend Gold Star families event at WH on Monday...closed to the press.

(CNN)First lady Melania Trump is expected to attend a White House event on Monday evening to honor Gold Star families, her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, confirms to CNN.

Although the President and Mrs. Trump hosted a similar event last year, the attendance of the first lady at this year's reception will mark the first time she has participated in an official event, either alone or by her husband's side, since May 10 when the first couple greeted freed American prisoners upon their return to Andrews Air Force Base following captivity in North Korea.

Monday's reception is closed to the press, but following last year's Gold Star families event, the White House released the following statement about the event with these remarks from Mrs. Trump: "Gold Star families have lost an immediate family member who was serving during wartime, and they are a unique and distinct category of individuals who should be cherished. These families have endured the ultimate in pain and sacrifice on behalf of our country, and I am honored to have spent the evening with them. My husband and I commit to always pay tribute to our active service military, veterans, and the families who love them."

Grisham tells CNN the first lady has been holding meetings with her East Wing staff about her platform initiatives, as well as planning for upcoming White House events.

As the press will not be there we can only wonder if any pictures of the event will be released. And I wonder if Sgt. LaDavid Johnson's family will be there.

And they had the First Lady there, so it was quite an honor, I'm telling you. There was Herb and me, Jenny and the kids. We were all very excited, almost enough to forget about Brad's death. He would have loved to have been there.

But before they let us in, they told us she wouldn't be able to talk to us. Laryngitis or something. Anyway, she was sitting there very prim, you know, the way she is. We were introduced, and I think she smiled at us. It's kind of hard to tell with her, you know? So, somebody made a few remarks, we all clapped, and then little Rhonda - she's so precocious - bolted over to where Melania was sitting, and very solemnly shook her hand. Well, the Secret Service guys swooped in and pulled Rhonda away, and we were escorted out. "Show's over," somebody said.

It wasn't until we were out in the hall that we noticed Rhonda had a hand full of sawdust! It was very peculiar. But we were at the White House, and got to meet the First Lady. I think.
