Trump pardoning himself compared to Nixon's pardon...

President Gerald Ford, granted his predecessor Richard Nixon a full and unconditional pardon for any crimes he might have committed against the United States while president.

President Donald Trump, granted himself, Donald Trump a full and unconditional pardon for any crimes he might have committed against the United States while president.

---

If this happened and was deemed legal Trump would probably be impeached but would receive no punishment at all for is crimes.
(Unless New York changes their double jeopardy law so they can indict him.)

are not covered by: a presidential pardon for federal crimes while president.

There are still a) state crimes and b) federal crimes before he was president -- which are the majority -- and c) crimes to be committed after he's president (a minority, but still likely voluminous).

to allow his successor Mike Pence to pardon him.

It isn't enough to be pardoned. Trump wants to stay in the WH without having to be responsible for his transgressions.
