Serena Williams has withdrawn from the French Open shortly before she was due on Philippe Chatrier Court to face Maria Sharapova in a much-anticipated fourth round showdown.

The 36-year-old 23-time grand slam champion, playing in her first slam since the 2017 Australian Open after maternity leave, told a news conference in Paris she had a pectoral muscle injury.

“Unfortunately I’m having some issues with my pec muscle. Right now I can’t actually serve so it’s kind of hard to play,” she said.

Or any even illusion that "Twitterville erupts" claiming it is about fear.

One of our greatest failings has been turning "someone on the internet said" into something societal.

Sharapova has five Grand Slams? That's huge. I wasn't aware it was that many.

Only one person in history has more slams than Serena (23) and that's Margaret Court (24), who played before the Open era.
No one in the Open era,- male or female, has more slams than Serena. That is beyond impressive. She has nothing to prove to Sharapova or anyone else.

I would never say or insinuate such a thing. It's unfortunate Sharapova's name is in the op and has anything to do with this.

I was well aware of Serena. I had no clue Sharapova had five grand slams. I think that puts here in the top twenty of grand slam winners in the modern era.

I was unaware Sharapova had five grand slams. That is the only content in the op that matters.

I just can't wake up for someone on the internet said. "Look at this tweet" does not constitute grand assumptions about society. True flaw in how people read things these days. One/a handful of comments on Twitter is all that is necessary to tell a whole story to some.

is intimidated by Maria. After reading her Unstoppable (the most amusing book title ever), I have nothing kind to say about Sharapova, but I do acknowledge than winning five slams does put her in the top 20.

Not sure where the "bro" and other stuff is coming from. Very amusing. I guess some buttons are already half way pushed these days.

Maybe we can Bro it together!

She has a decent game but I don't like her as a person. And the PED suspension tainted everything she achieved
The last straw for me was when she tried to change her name to Sugarpova to promote her candy company. The WTA said absolutely not.

But, she was dismissed in some regard in her earliest days because she was getting more attention for her good looks than for her tennis ability.

That started to fade but when she got nailed for the drug violation at the Aussie open, the doubters had a new box of ammo.

So, she's experienced two different periods where she was dismissed and her true skill was undermined.

It also didn't help that she peaked during the Williams' era. Geez, they've got 30 major wins between the two of them, and if i'm not mistaken, a total of 9 majors have been lost because one of the sisters beat the other in the final.

Five majors is actually more impressive when one takes into account that for a very long time, women's tennis has been dominated by the two sisters to this degree. Would have been like winning 5 majors when Martina and Chrissy were dominating.

Just finding a way to win 5 times when 2 players have won 30 is pretty darned good.

Mentioning how impressive her five grand slams are is the exact opposite of negating the unbelievable record of the Williams sisters.

Sharapova has some game. When I watched more tennis she was one of the ones I liked to watch. Great player. I just had to turn the volume off.

Two French and one apiece of the other three.

Very few players own that accomplishment.

Anyway, I'm not a Serena fan so I don't care about any criticism, deserved or not. IMO, her numbers are inflated since she came around in a very weak era. She certainly didn't have to contend with a Navratilova or Graf caliber player. The two Belgians gave Serena fits, especially Henin, who knocked Serena out in three consecutive majors one year. But both Belgians retired early so that cleared the path.

A sports journalist over the weekend had the audacity to ask Serena if she was intimidated by Sharapova's " looks" . He later apologized. He prefaced it by saying that, by saying Trump said it. Go figure.
