I thought that the intention was noble, to prevent candidates from the extremes - both right and left - from winning. In hindsight the older system helped the Democrats. Many moderate Republicans lost in the primaries to candidates who "stood on principles" and ended up losing in the general elections. This is how Republicans lost all state wide offices.

But now, we Democrats show, again, that we cannot get organized long enough to win.
