all disagreement on social issues to hate. That's a trumpian level of "understanding," which is to say no understanding at all because none is desired.

We have neighbors who love their gay son and are nevertheless opposed to homosexuality and to gay marriage. The notion that their positions arise from hate, knowing them, is frankly appalling in its refusal to consider any viewpoints that might complicate reality and what appears to me very like partisan-generated...enmity.

I have never understood why refreshments (because that's what a cake is) served at a party *after* a religious celebration counts as a religious statement.
