Robert Francis Kennedy, 11/20/1925 - 6/6/1968:
"Some men see things as they are, and say 'Why?' I dream things that never were, and say 'Why not?'"
--Robert Kennedy, quoting George Bernard Shaw
Rest In Peace, Bobby. You were--ARE--my political hero. We lost our collective soul when we lost you.

(14,565 posts)I remember the prior night extremely well. My dad and I visited his mom -- my grandmother -- at her home in Coral Gables. Then we ate at the Huddle House three lots away on the corner. We sat at the front on the round stools. My dad talked politics at length with the guy sitting next to us, all focused on the California primary that night and specifically Robert Kennedy's chances. I remember being so impressed at how smart and informed my dad was. Well, he did teach civics for years.
The next morning I turned on the television to watch my typical kids shows. To my surprise they were not on. There was a large white vehicle with some guy speaking from a megaphone to many people standing in the street. I listened long enough to learn that Robert Kennedy had been shot and was clinging to life.
I entered my parents' room and awoke my mom and dad. My dad sprung from the bed and was mad at me, saying I better not be making it up just to wake them up. I insisted it was true. He rushed in front of the television and broke down emotionally.
The next day dad opened up my large wooden toy chest and got rid of everything that looked like a gun or acted like a gun.
Everyone at school was silent and somber that day and the next day, when we found out Robert Kennedy had died.
