I love this. I know Reid shouldn't have done that but I think it is hilarious that they are having their tactics turned around on them

(39,961 posts)and Dana Bash back this source far more credible than anything that ever came out of Mitt Romney's mouth. His shoe is about the only thing that comes out of Romney's mouth these days, and that's because he put his foot in there.

(14,180 posts)"highly credible". So it's not mere hearsay, but 'highly credible' hearsay, acc. to Reid and acc. to Bash's source.
Still hearsay but of a little higher quality than run-of-the-mill type. And Romney still, STILL, has not released his returns.
What does Romney have to hide?

(954 posts)I sincerely believe Reid has some dirt and knows some media insiders have access, too.
He knew that Romney wouldn't resist trying to go on offense with this, putting it back in the headlines for several days. THEN, Reid probably knew a few media insiders would begin sniffing their own stories to keep the topic alive for another week.
The bottom line is that the Romney campaign is a disaster.

(47,608 posts)Harry Reid is not the type of person to throw something out there without justification. A story coming from him has to be really intimidating to the Romney camp. If Reid is bluffing, he has a great poker face.
Meanwhile, toying with Romney seems to bring Reid great pleasure. The burden of proof now lies with the candidate.
I don't think Harry Reid would have said what he did if he did not have pretty good facts to back him up . He is not known for just shooting off his mouth .

(25 posts)This is simple. No politics. No questions about Reid's motivations. No mention of "Well, the Repukes do it, too." No mention of Obama's birth certificate. None of that endless, tedious talk is necessary.
This is a simple matter of Romney merely doing what all Presidential candidates do when they run.
The comparison is that of a soldier or government employee getting a Top Secret clearance. In that case, tax returns are reviewed. That's all.
If there is anything political about this issue at all, it is the stupendous, dunderheaded blunder that Romney exhibited by not releasing his returns earlier in the first place.
So, stop talkin' around the issue. It's simple. Releasing tax returns is a minimum requirement for running for President.
Stop playing the Repuke game. Make it simple.

Every day that Mitt does not release his returns make his look more and more shifty and less and less presidential.

(35,015 posts)Are you naive enough to believe that simple asking Romney to release his returns because it's a minimum requirement would be effective?
Any comparisons of this issue to the birthers, or using Republican tactics is faulty as you've pointed out, but what what Reid has done is quite brilliant, putting the burden of proof on Romney. It ensures the issue remains an albatross around Romney's neck, until he complies. But if he does comply, then what's revealed may be even more damaging to Romney.
It's THAT simple.

(17,651 posts)He's got that weird laugh as he's talking about his tax returns and he pays a lot of taxes. I can't remember who noticed that uncomfortable laugh but they are right, it's there.
Romney seemed really irate - in his speech and his body language.
If he's faking his reactions, he's doing a really good job. This guy is strung tight and I love it!

(8,224 posts)My impression is that Harry Reid does not roll like that. If it was Alan Grayson, I would say tactics were in play, because he is a risk taker with a sense for courtroom drama.
Given it is coming from Reid, I would say that as usual, he is underplaying his hand. He probably knows it is a dozen years if not 20.
He can't say how he knows or put up evidence if he has it from official sources. This is the gambit Rmoney is playing, the "show me how you know and we will start an investigation on your source of confidential info" trick. He wants to divert the scandal onto the leak rather than the info.

(53,871 posts)Great post. I only disagree on the part of whether Harry Reid should have done it. I think he knew exactly what he was doing and I'm glad he did it. This is for the presidency, it's hardball politics and Rmoney is not entitled to go unexamined tax-wise like he thinks he should be. He's not any different than all the other candidates that have released several years of taxes. I know he feels a sense of entitlement about everything else but he's not getting to the White House without this bit of transparency.

I love your phrasing . . . "WITH that transparency, either. He's about to be fucked like a paid-for Porn Star." Your words definitely conjure up some imagery.
I'll say this for DU...ALL of the people here can understand a turn of phrase and "colorful metaphors", even if some of them express their distaste for such, ...shall we say....non-standard language?
Thanks for not minding, and I like not having to pull punches linguistics-wise. Sometimes, it's the only accurate way to convey the context of actual reality.
And do stock up on popcorn for Tampa. I think we're going to enjoy the show.
