From real estate to diplomacy, Trump chases the ultimate deal in Singapore

By Jeremy Diamond, CNN

Updated 9:37 AM ET, Sun June 10, 2018

Singapore (CNN)Donald Trump had made up his mind.

He wanted to own a fleet of airplanes that would carry his name from New York to Boston and Washington. The airline would be luxe and lavish -- fresh leather seats, marble-like counters and flights christened with champagne -- like everything else that is branded "Trump." And he didn't care how much it cost him, as long as it served to burnish his brand.

"The first day I met him -- October 4, 1988 -- he told me: 'I'm not doing this because I want to make a lot of money,'" recalled Bruce Nobles, the airline executive Trump recruited to run his Trump Shuttle.

"The shuttle operation was a New York institution. Anybody who was anybody, any of the powerbrokers in the northeast took the shuttle on a daily basis. Donald wanted all of those people flying on his airline," Nobles said.

It’s all about making money for his business in the future. I bet the contracts are already starting to get written.

I look forward to your posts. This one feels too much like a pump up trum piece more than anything. I get the gist about it, but, on a Democratic Board(?) it's just too much dt for the small point we/I all pretty much know. Just a thought from a nobody over here. Keep up the good work. Don Viejo!!

But, I think it serves the purpose of showing the dichotomy of reality vs events as they are presented by the media.

So, I have mixed emotions about it's inclusion in DU.

What with THIS and on the other hand Trumpanzees saying the PM of Canada is going to hell.

I trust DV's judgement about what to post.

Just some feedback for the Old Don Viejo. Literally a major news source. (for me anyway.) Seems theres more and more posts from fox news etc that show a whole segment of whatever fox was saying....for a few nuggets of good. JUST as an example. Disturbing bc I refuse to watch the channel. Are you having a good Sunday??

Trump will have several meetings with Kim. Each will be a reality TV event. The talking heads will gab about it. Nothing of any significance will happen. But Trump will turn each into a media event. His base will love it. We won't. And life goes on in the 1984 world of Donald J Trump

It'll be his excuse, his cover, his talking point, his blah. Obama could've gone and done that. Kim wouldv'e loved it. Pres Obama knew Americans have built our countries prestige in lives and service and treasure. You don't wipe a big dose of good on some dictator, for political cover. Kim feeds people to dogs and pigs! He shot a man w an Anti Aircraft Gun, to make a point. He killed his brother w VX gas. In short, It's just not done to encourage that, until now. repubs have ZERO moral ground. I don't want to hear a lecture from any of them.

Right you are. Trump does not care though. He knows next to nothing. Refuses to even be meaningfully briefed....that is because he knows his goal, and it is all about Donald J Trump. If his little reality tv show hurts American foreign policy objectives, he couldn't care less.

7. Trump's "experts" have a pretty good idea what N.Korea wants

The whole notion of "face time" and "prestige" is way overblown. Kim can't eat prestige. He has to have the economic resilience to patronize the power structure in North Korea. Some elements of the government and people of North Korea are starving for food and resources as a result of the sanctions. The North needs normalization of relations, and the ability to engage economically with S.Korea and the rest of the world. He can't pay the 16 million dollar bill at Singapore. The latter government will probably pay half of that.

Some of Trump's recent statements show that he has listened to at least some of his experts at some point. It isn't clear to me that his critics would be happy if Bolton stayed home. In my opinion Bolton is not an "expert" and should have been left behind as his function is merely that of a provocateur.

Some of the experts Trump has brought along are veterans and do know what they're doing. I think the ones that Trump has had disagreements with are gone. Whether they will get the desired results remains to be seen. Here is a BBC article on Trump's team:
