MONTREAL Before he was elected Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau faced a consistent type of criticism from his opponents: he was too young and too eager to please, said conservatives. His economic plans added up to unicorns and rainbows. He didnt have the gravitas to represent Canada internationally.
But President Trump has helped bring together the bitterest of Canadian enemies, as he lashed out at Trudeau following the G-7 meeting in Quebec, and even the countrys most staunch conservatives have publicly backed up their Liberal prime minister for taking a tough tone in the U.S.-Canada trade conflict.
I think sometimes, you know, you have to tell the schoolyard bully that they cant have your lunch money. And I think that thats what the prime minister did today, said Jaime Watt, a Toronto-based conservative political strategist. I think most Canadians would say that they were proud of their prime minister.
A spokesman for the federal NDP party, which is left of center, echoed those on the right. All Canadians stand united against these inflammatory attacks on our government officials, said James Smith. Mr. Trump has made a career out of using bully tactics, and we all know theres only one way to stop a bully.
But that sense of solidarity extends further than Trudeaus approach this weekend, said Watt and other Canadian political insiders from across the ideological spectrum.
Whatever the prime ministers other actions on the world stage, dealing with Trump is a unique dilemma, they said, and they havent been bothered by Trudeaus decision to stick to civility until now.

I suspect a lot of Americans will rally around Trudeau as well.

(1,216 posts)not the other way around. Trudeau's base is in Quebec. Trump should have kept his mouth shut about Canadian Tariffs on dairy products. That should have been discussed privately.

(31,261 posts)All that happened is that EACH province lowered the price target for a milk byproduct (what is left when the more desirable cream is filtered out). The USA had been selling lots of the product to Canada businesses, when the price target was lowers for the Canadian product, businesses there started buying the Canadian product, for a number of reasons other than just price. What Canada did is similar to this example: Say I told you that you needed to sell a banana to Harry for $3 each. But Mary from the town over is sending bananas into town and offering them for $2, so Harry buys bananas from Mary and you have to dump your bananas in the trash because they are no good for anything else. You complain to me that my price target is too high for your bananas and as a result, you are selling none. I lower the price target that I require you to sell a banana to $2. Now Harry knows that your bananas are better than Mary's because she uses fruit ripening techniques that Harry's customers are a little queasy about, so Harry switches and starts buying your bananas. In a nutshell, the example is pretty much what happened.

(1,216 posts)Well..that surprises me none. But I distinctly recall in his news conference him saying Canada has TARIFFS (exact word he used) as high as 270% on US agricultural products. Media needs to call him out on mis-representing this issue.

(1,077 posts)To me there is no need for dRumpf negarating the Canadians. I've been in and out of Canada since 1960.
Who got the Americans home when the Iranians took over the US Embassy?
In trade between countries, we are the country that has a trade surplus. dRumpf has his head and facts on wrong.
To me, dRumpf is a waste of our time. But, we are being subjected to the tyranny of the minority. Or in other words a lot of
citizens are being treated like mushrooms. Kept in the dark and fed manure.
