Wind, lightening, and rain. First real storm of the summer and lots of dry ground out there to soak it up.

(37,364 posts)and lots of high temps. It looks like a wasteland here. In 2008. we had so much water you couldn't give it away. Feast or famine.

(14,881 posts)you know, desertification? A couple 100 year droughts every decade? 100 year floods in between?
Or were you trying to be helpful by, you know, raining on somebody else's parade?

(45,358 posts)I've been watching the wundermap radar all morning. It's a little obsession of mine.
I want it to rain for a week straight. That'd be really nice.

(37,364 posts)Some of the ponds have dried up, rivers are low, and the ground is cracked and parched.

It's been awfully dry here too, of course, but I still don't think I could take more than four hours of rain.
Usually after that much I fall on the ground, kicking and screaming "make it stop, make it stop, please make it stop."

(37,364 posts)A lot of farmers have turned the stalks in to silage. Many of them were seeing no ears or ears with few kernels on them.
I had a load of blackberries on the brambles this spring and was looking forward to a bumper crop but they literally cooked before they could ripen in the heat we had.

(32,611 posts)The pictures I have seen are heartbreaking and the stories about next year's crop likely being just as bad is really frightening.

(37,364 posts)We came into the warmer seasons with no real ground moisture and the soil was much warmer than normal.

(16,254 posts)I'd even take the "red" in the weathermap just to get some rain, but it divides and goes above or below us. It has done that all summer. It's almost like we have a wall around us to keep out the rain. I doubt this one will do much for the crops. They are beyond help.
It will sure be nice to have those cooler temps for a while. It was SO humid and hot early this morning that it took my breath away, but we should drop into the 70s.
The birds are standing in and enjoying the drizzle.

(37,364 posts)The rain either went in a line two counties to the north on the Minnesota border or further south into Missouri. It has been one miserable summer.
catbyte
(34,485 posts)Over the city. Storms just split to the north and to the south while we are parched. Training thunderstorms all around us and here even the weeds won't grow. Worst I've seen since 1988. They're forecasting storms tonight, keeping fingers crossed. This hot & dry so close to Lake Michigan is almost unheard of.
Frustratedlady
(16,254 posts)That is the strange thing about this summer. Our humidity and temps have been so high, you'd think they would bring more rain, but I guess my brain is on drought status, as well.
At least we are now in the high 70s. That sure beats the high 90-100s.
There is a stream of moisture coming up from the SW, so maybe we'll all get more rain when it hits the cooler temps. Otherwise, what little drizzle we got was just enough to raise the humidity and nothing more.

Maybe I should go out and wash my windows. It ALWAYS rains the day after.

(129,662 posts)Having something to moisten the ground helps to start to break the cycle. Hopefully folks in the central U.S. can cash in on some of Ernesto's rain if it manages to head that way and survive as a tropical rainstorm.
We got some rain here at the same time that you posted! Lots of thunder and lightning and old fashioned showers with huge drops of rain that moved in disconnected sheets. Now it's more slop bin then the slop bin that we were having.

(51,666 posts)But that is extremely abnormal and practically unheard of - it's AUGUST, for crying out loud - in the San Fernando Valley. I've been here 29 years and I don't think I have ever seen a drop in August.

(81,527 posts)We know all about the torrents that come after brushfire season, when everything is dry and the ground doesn't have much to hold it in place. You guys need your top soil to stay where it is! I would hope you get doses of it with some drying-out time between dowsings. That way, the ground has a chance to absorb the water and you have less wasteful run-off.
Good to hear that the rain finally came, though! I hope the crops can be salvaged!

(39,909 posts)We've tried everything.
Washing the cars.
Leaving the windows down
Hanging laundry outside
Power tools laying outside in the yard
Dancing naked under the full moon at midnight
Nothing working here.
No rain.
The spring is still running ice cold and clear,
so we consider ourselves lucky.
If that dries up, we will be in real trouble.
