Trump announces US will stop 'provocative' war games with South Korea in major concession to Kim Jong-un'I think it is very provocative. You have a country that is right next door'
Adam Withnall 2 hours ago
Speaking in a press conference after Mr Kim left Singapore, the US president said the "war games are very expensive", adding that the US pays "a big majority of the expenses for them".
Mr Trump said his second motivation for stopping war games with South Korea was that it was inappropriate now that talks had begun with North Korea.
"I think it is very provocative," he said. "You have a country that is right next door."
Mr Trump appeared to suggest that he had not yet discussed stopping the war games with South Korea itself, saying it was something "we have to talk to them about".

(28,270 posts)Now he withdraws our military out of the region and China moves right on in.
They already have been building up military forces on man made islands there.
Sorry Japan, hope you get along with your new Chinese masters.

(3,477 posts)The Pacific belongs only to the US and its allies? As for Japan, if they hadnt slaughtered millions of Chinese in the pursuit of naked imperialism and later attempted to deny or justify that, perhaps they would have little to worry about now.

(28,270 posts)Japan is a vibrant democracy.
Meanwhile back in the USA our government at the time slaughtered the Native Americans and committed genocide against them. Not even mentioning the evils of slavery.
Hitler actually admired the way we wiped out the Native Americans and sought to emulate us in his extermination of the Jews.
There are plenty of sins in the past for all countries but we must live in the present.

(3,477 posts)The atrocities. Atrocities which still exist in the living memory of some Chinese and which have had a significant impact on the modern Chinese national psyche. As an example, only a few months ago I watched a childrens cartoon with my son at my in-laws home in Wuhan which featured Japanese soldiers ravaging the countryside and the revenge taken by the local Communist militia unit (of course its as if the Guomindang armed forces never made any contribution to Japans defeat) was aired on mainstream CCTV during prime viewing hours. The war is still very much on the mind so to speak. From what I understand, Chinese national defence strategy as it relates to Japan is containment. In essence, neutralizing Japans capability to project aggressive force beyond its own borders. As long as Japan remains devoted to self defense, its highly unlikely China would initiate any kinetic conflict as the current economic order benefits China greatly. But should Japans posture change, China is developing the capability to kick its teeth in to prevent a repeat of what happened in the last century. Thats simply the reality.
