President Donald Trumps refusal to make multilateral trade deals suited to the 21st century economy could cost the U.S. key influence in the global market for decades to come, a group of trade policy experts said at a debate Wednesday evening.
We cant continue looking in the rearview mirror at manufacturing experience as our guide, said Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. We need to learn from the past as we move into the next era that will be about global flows and services.
The trade experts at the discussion, Globalization and the American Worker, criticized Trumps moves that have isolated the U.S. while Chinas trade power balloons.
The president should work with nations that share similar U.S. concerns about intellectual property theft and related issues, said Mercatus Center Fellow Christine McDaniel. The way to change Chinas behavior is to work with our likeminded allies who are just as frustrated with China as we are, said McDaniel, who served as an economist in the Bush White House and Treasury Department.

With that comes isolationism, destruction of education/environmental/social programs, consolidation of wealth to the top, suppression of the vote, loss of individual/minority/womens rights, and ultimately the end of Democracy.

(16,104 posts)The mantra for capitalism remains "buy low, sell high."
If there is a way to produce a product for less, that is where the money goes.
"Globalization" has shown that in the long run, it's kind of a wash to buy Apple products made in China at a labor discount, or making them here for a limited market where higher and higher wages will be necessary to buy the product produced here. It's a zero sum gain. It's a bullshit political ploy.
The benefit of "globalization" is the natural progression from exploited peasant class to working class to middle class, and the political power and democratic urge that results in the order of things. There is a leveling out.
We couldn't match the quality and price of Japanese autos? Now, our labor costs are the same if not better than in Japan, we make those cars HERE now!
The Dotard wants to impose government regualtion on these forces? I believe THIS is when the R's take notice.
