FCC Planning to Change Rules to Save Sinclair's Takeover of Local News Before Courts Kill It

https://gizmodo.com/fcc-reportedly-planning-to-change-rules-to-save-sinclai-1826818478

Fresh off finally completing the goal of killing net neutrality protections, Ajit Pai’s Federal Communications Commission is onto its next attempt to destroy longstanding rules that have protected American consumers. According to Bloomberg, the FCC is planning on sneaking in a vote to change limits on how many television stations a single company can own to make way for Sinclair Broadcast Group’s massive takeover of local broadcasting.

Per the report, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai intends to schedule a vote on July 12th to alter the current cap on the reach of a single broadcaster. The vote would allow the FCC to get out ahead of the US Court of Appeals, which is currently hearing a case challenging part of the current rules that limit station ownership. The vote would allow the FCC to leapfrog the courts and put its own ruling forward first.

The vote would tackle a decades-old rule first introduced in the 1970s that intended to prevent massive media mergers that would allow a single company to control the majority of the airwaves across the country. The regulations set the cap at 39 percent of all households, but Pai is ready to blow that up in order to do a favor for Sinclair, a broadcaster with a conservative bent that has been intent on gobbling up as much control of local markets as possible.

The cable & telcos write up the rules & regs and passes them on to the FCC.
The FCC rubber stamps them and it becomes the law of the land after that.

I know that Trump and his cronies are only motivated by their own greed or desire for vengeance, but I find it particularly sad and of course hypocritical (hand in hand with Republican politics) that Trump had the DOJ go after the AT&T/Time Warner merger and try to block it, but yet they are bending over backwards to allow Sinclair to create a monopoly.

I already know and said that the opposition was personal and this is obviously being done to benefit one of Trump's backers, but the argument that was used was that AT&T/TW was unfair to competition. Well, allowing Sinclair to gobble up more of the local media market is ALSO UNFAIR to competition.

Anyway rant off...

1) get a Democratic President installed in 2020/2021....
2) They appoint a new FCC panel...
3) New Democratic majority FCC changes the rules back to what they are right now (minus the UHF discount)
4) ?????
5) Profit! (or in this case, Sinclair is forced to sell stations).
