RW "persecution" is the denial of privilege. Things that are objectively beneficial mean little if they are not accompanied by the exclusion of others.
Global studies always find that the happiness effect of wealth is relative, not absolute. Your happiness is tied to how much richer you are than those around you. That relative status is what makes you feel rich.
To the Romneys of the world, no matter how many billions they have they cannot enjoy all that money while knowing that some poor people have a TV or a cell phone or a microwave oven. If poor people have them, what's the point in owning a TV or a cell phone or a microwave oven?
To the the "War on Christmas" types, they cannot enjoy their rich personal relationship with the creator of the universe unless other religions are being excluded.
These people do not want Freedom. They want privilege.
