Anecdotal - but telling, nonetheless

As an avid knitter/crocheter, I participate on a number of websites devoted to the crafts.

One of them occasionally has discussion threads about politics, and a large swath of posters (mostly older white women) declared themselves Trump devotees from the time he took office. They invariably say the same thing when anyone posts an anti-Trump comment: “Stop complaining! Everything is going great and he’s accomplishing so much!”

Well, two days ago, someone started a discussion with the question: ”If you are a Trump supporter, can you tell us what it is you believe he’s accomplished as president?”

The responses were as follows: ”That’s none of your business.” “You have no right to ask anyone that.” “I don’t have to tell you.” “Why do you want to know?” “I have better things to do with my time.”

All of the responses from the pro-Trumpers were like that. Not a single poster was able to come up with a single positive thing to brag about – and they all got extremely angry/defensive about even being asked the question.

I couldn’t help but think of how I would have responded to a similar question while Obama was in office – and how I would have had literally dozens of things to point to, in terms of his achievements.

I think the Trumpsters’ reaction is telling. They want desperately to believe that their idol is delivering on his “MAGA agenda” – but they’re beginning to realize that when pressed for details, they can’t come up with anything, simply because there’s no “there” there.

I know that several of the people who weighed-in are FOX-News enthusiasts, but even they couldn’t come up with anything to say, despite being bombarded with pro-Trump propaganda on a daily basis. No one mentioned their “massive tax cut”, because they’re middle-class folk who literally got nothing. No one mentioned getting a better job or a raise thanks to the tax cuts given to their employers. No one spoke about feeling safer because those “criminal immigrants” are being deported.

I believe there are people out there who are beginning to realize that things are not exactly as advertised. As with most Republicans, they usually regurgitate what party leaders are telling them – but they couldn’t even go that route.

I liken it to a local hangout. People gathered at the Trump Bar & Grill, high-fiving each other over their “win”. They were ecstatic about the idea that “certain people” were told they weren’t welcome, and toasted to the better days ahead they were promised.

But after a while, just as with all such suddenly-popular hangouts, the patrons are starting to realize that the quality of the food is sub-par, the drinks are watered-down, the wait staff is rude and incompetent, and the prices keep going up to the point where they can’t afford to “hang with the crowd” after all.

The promised “huge tax cuts” for middle-class Americans never materialized, the Mexico-funded border wall never materialized, and the Make America Great Again agenda has turned out to be nothing more than a bunch of made-in-China hats and tees that fade with every wash-‘n-wear news cycle.

Republican voters are stupid – that goes without saying. But even the dumbest of the dumb tend to wake up when the shit hits the fan when that fan happens to be located in their own home, and their own pockets are full of nothing but bullshit promises.

Patience, my friends. When staunch Trumpsters can’t point to a single accomplishment their Messiah has allegedly achieved, it’s an unmistakable sign that they’re starting to question whether their own loyalty was misplaced, and their own party has sold them a worthless bill of goods.

Republican voters don’t care that the wealthy got tax cuts – they only care that they didn’t get one. Republican voters don’t care if their “pResident” is an idiot – they only care if his idiocy affects them personally. Republican voters don’t care if Trump spends his time golfing and tweeting covfefe – they only care when the bullshit hits them right between the eyes – and it’s beginning to.

As I said up front, this is based on anecdotal evidence. But it’s that on-the-ground evidence that gives me hope that Republican voters – as dumb as they have proven themselves to be – may not be the complacent sheep their party has counted on.

Let’s remember that if you can talk Evangelicals into believing that a pussy-grabbing adulterer is a model Christian ordained by God to rule a nation, you are dealing with sheep who can be just as equally manipulated into turning against him.

And at this juncture, the powers-that-be in the GOP are no doubt preparing the talking points aimed at doing exactly that. Trump is a liability that the Republicans don’t want weighing them down going into the general election in 2020 – a campaign cycle that will begin the minute the 2018 midterms are over – which means it’s time to “adjust the message” in order to promote a more suitable, God-fearing Christian like Mike Pence to lead the flock to electoral victory.

The Emperor’s new clothes are coming apart at the seams, and those who once believed his wardrobe was impenetrable are – slowly, but surely – realizing that his teeny-tiny dick, now exposed for all to see, is just as flaccid and disappointing as his promises.

You've articulated the coming fracturing of the "Trump coalition."

I perceive one problem. These stupid Republican voters are not going to vote for a Democratic candidate. Period. The tribalism is too strong.

The thing we can do, (and I know you know this so forgive me), is get our voters to the polls and hope that these disillusioned former Trumpers will just stay home on Election Day. Then, if we can prevent interference by Russian bots and cyber-assaults, maybe we can save our republic.

It is, for the most part, a site that steers clear of political discussion. It was extremely unusual for this particular discussion thread to have been posted at all.

In normal times, the worst epithet to be hurled at any politician would have been that he couldn't execute a perfect series of cable stitches required for a Guernsey pullover.

TO THE STAR TRIBUNE …

I don’t like you or your readers. I like Trump. He’ll win again.

Hello, poster child for fake news. I am continually surprised by your high percentage of underinformed readers and editorials. Fake news promulgated by fools like your fake newspaper — you print whatever the failed New York Times and Associated Press dictate to your paper.

You do not realize that every time you print this fake news and your totally underinformed readers write, we conservatives gain new voters — thank you!

Looking forward to your fake coverage of the POTUS speech next week in Duluth (“Trump to hold rally in Duluth June 20”).

Heads up to your readers — Trump will be re-elected in 2020 and will win Minnesota. Write it down.

Why does the writer like Trump? Damned if I know; he doesn't say. But apparently anything the paper prints that's critical of Trump in any way is "fake news," fed to it by the Failing New York Times and the AP. He assumes that the coverage of Trump's upcoming speech will be fake, too. This guy isn't just drinking the kool-aid; he's swimming in it. He likes Trump and the news about him is fake. I guess we don't need to know anything else.

The Trumpists don't need any reasons at all any more - the mark of a true personality cult. What your Dear Leader does or says or believes in is no longer important because you automatically agree with him about everything. It's the lemmingization of America, or at least about a third of it.

These white people see themselves as the only completely human beings. They have a fierce loyalty to something they call "western civilization," which they think was invented only by white people, which embodies the true version of all the virtues of justice, mercy, science, law, and industry. These people actually think Socrates and Jesus Christ and Saint Nicholas were blond and blue-eyed. They don't know that our civilization has developed from ideas and skills and virtues from all kinds of people all over the world. They think the other races are multiplying too fast, and the white race will be wiped out, and all civilization will end. There is that book by Count Gobineau, which has a picture of subhumans in the future wondering at the decayed ruins of a civilization they cannot begin to comprehend.

Now that geneticists have discovered that the northern European pale-skinned blue-eyed genotype is less than ten thousand years old and will probably be very rare in maybe a thousand years, these people are absolutely terrified. They cannot conceive of a time when a blond blue-eyed baby will be born only very occasionally into a functioning civilization where those around him will say, Hmm, that's an unusual look, oh, well, that's nice, and move on to discuss the latest advances in rocket propulsion and interplanetary negotiations. When Obama was elected President, with Michelle as First Lady, this was just a nightmare for them. So Trump is their hero, like Beowulf or Roland or Thor, speaking the "truth" about the inferior Other, vanquishing their enemies, restoring their tribe to its rightful dominant position. That is what they are afraid to say out loud. At least most of them. But they are working on overcoming the "tyranny of political correctness" which they believe is blinding most white people to the dire situation, hoping to gather the tribe for the great effort that is needed.

It sort of reminds me of those crazy warrior video games.

The Trumpinistas on the other hand are ignorant and easily frightened. Pox News depends on their viewers' worst fears and lowest instincts compounded by ignorance. And sometimes the bigotry reveals itself when not expected. I was in a group of friends, all Vietnam combat vets. One referred to one of the group as his black friend. My response was "why can't you just call him your friend?" Not surprisingly, he voted for Trump. I no longer speak to him. I'm too old to suffer fools and bigots.

stubborn because they do not even want to admit it to themselves that they were taken in. I read an article that explained how "they think", I know, I know, they DON'T think and that is part of the problem. They are selfish and they are world class haters. When it hits them personally in the pocketbook only then will we see a change, and maybe not even then.

My impression is that Trumpsters delight in Trump's vulgarity, brutality, and bigotry. Because they themselves are bigots, and more particularly racists. Deeply resentful when black and brown people move up and demonstrate themselves to be just as able and accomplished as any white person, given the opportunity. Angry that life is difficult, and it's all someone else's fault that their life is not a bed of roses.

So when Trump calls immigrants animals and erases Obama's accomplishments, it feeds their deep-seated desire to wreck vengence on us.. They resent not being able to use the N-word. They know perfectly well how wicked they are. That they don't live up to Christian values. But they don't care. They are a lost cause. It's very sad.

the Trumpers do not seem to be coming around at all. They are impervious to facts or to the lack of them. They just know that Rump is their Lord and Savior and can do no wrong. One of them, in particular, keeps harping on the FSA (Free Stuff Army) and how the Others (read Interlopers) are taking their stuff. They also seem to have some really misguided sense of Anarchy. I think you are too sanguine based on a limited sample (mine is limited also).
