Map of Governor's Races Favors Democrats

June 16, 2018 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Jennifer Duffy: “As the political universe fixates on the battles for control of Congress, little attention is being paid to the 36 gubernatorial contests on the ballot in November. But, the stakes for control of governorships are high given that most of the Governors elected this year will be in office during redistricting in 2021. And, races are starting to become engaged and more interesting.”

“Governors’ races are not immune to mid-term election trends. Just as the party in power loses seats in the U.S. House and Senate, it also loses gubernatorial seats… Given the near historic number of seats Republicans hold and mid-term trends, it would seem that they have nowhere to go but down. They are playing defense this cycle, while Democrats are working to put as many GOP-held seats on the board as possible.”

The Cook Political Report has updated its race ratings.

our governor is really showing a deaf ear to citizen's problems.
It is quite early. I am thinking right now that as we get deeper into the race the worse she will look.

republican governor Rauner is despised by all democrats and most of his own party. Not sure what Charlie Cook been smoking but if a guaranteed 20 point win by priztker is considered "tossup", Cook is nuts

Not sure it leans 'R'. Ohio has been badly hurt by Trump's tariffs. We don't have enough steel and the autos are being attacked...if he goes after foreign cars...the giant Honda plant in Marysville will be affected. Plus the separation of kids from parents is playing very badly here. Our farmers are in trouble as well.

Much as I loathe Ruiner, I'm terrified that Pritzger will have some horrible awful PR nightmare drop before the election. There have already been ads with the FBI tape of Pritzger on the phone with Blago talking about which black Dem could be appointed into Obama's Senate seat, and I am seriously worried about what else could be out there to drop at election time.

Gawd, I f***ing HATE Rauner.

... If we split the toss ups.

I hope that NH is so fed up with the R's that they reject Sununu for another pick up.

Thank you for the post. Good info in an election year!
