Trump continues to falsely claim there's a law on family separation, blames Democrats

NANCY CORDES CBS NEWS June 15, 2018, 6:39 PM

WASHINGTON -- Roughly 50 children a day are being taken from their parents after they cross the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). But on Friday, President Trump insisted he's not the one separating families.

"The Democrats forced that law upon our nation. I hate it," he said.

The fact that there is no such law did not stop the president from repeating his assertion half a dozen times.

"The Democrats have to change their law, that's their law," he said. "That's the Democrats' law. We can change it tonight!"

Democrats said what Mr. Trump should change is a "zero tolerance" policy announced on May 7 by his own attorney general, Jeff Sessions. It means that asylum seekers who would previously have been released pending a hearing are now held behind bars, and their children are sent to separate shelters like a former Walmart in Brownsville, Texas.

They are a party of racist liars and traitors.

What pisses me off is the constant normalizing of Trump's outrageous lies by the MSM.

I'm wondering if his going after immigrant children is his way of playing the role of his favorite dictator Kim.

Where is the UN? If this were happening anywhere else there would be a security council vote condeming this. I know we would block it, but at least bring it up and make the US block it in front of the world.

And it needs to be done NOW!

Let Trump's mouthpiece in the UN block it and really show the world the child abusing depths that the republican party and Trump have dragged us down to!

This is an outright lie!

From Politifact:

"Before the Trump administration, immigrants entering illegally as families were rarely prosecuted, said Sarah Pierce, an associate policy analyst of the U.S. Immigration Program at the Migration Policy Institute. Instead, immigrants were held in family detention centers until they were sent to appear before an immigration court or deported.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on April 6 the Homeland Security Department would now be referring all illegal border crossings to the Justice Department for prosecution. Facing criminal charges, parents would go to detention centers, leaving their children unaccompanied.

It’s the decision to prosecute parents that is causing the separations.

"That’s a choice they have made that’s largely different from what other administrations have done," said Peter Margulies, an immigration law and national security law professor at Roger Williams University School of Law.

When we asked for evidence of policies separating families, the White House referred us to items determining what happens to unaccompanied immigrant minors. But none of the children in question would be deemed unaccompanied if the Trump administration did not decide to prosecute their parents.

The 1997 Flores Settlement Agreement, for example, calls for the release of unaccompanied minors to family members or sponsors who can care for them as their immigration case is resolved. The Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, which Trump has wrongly called "a Democrat rule," determines that unaccompanied minors be transferred to Health and Human Services custody.

The White House argued such policies encourage parents to send their children into the United States, knowing they will be promptly released.

"The cruel and inhumane open borders policies of the Democratic Party are responsible for encouraging mass illegal migration, enabling horrendous child smuggling, and releasing violent MS-13 gang members into American communities," White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said in an emailed statement.

The Trump administration may believe that Democrats are responsible for policies that encourage illegal border crossing, but we found no law mandating that children be separated from their parents.

Trump said a "horrible law" requires that children be separated from their parents "once they cross the Border into the U.S."

There is no such law. The Homeland Security Department’s longstanding policy is to separate children from their custodians when they are referred for criminal prosecution. Trump’s administration has decided to prosecute all illegal crossings. Families were rarely prosecuted under previous administrations."

Children to be snatched away from their parent(s) and caged like wild animals know that the optics of this are not good. So they go to great lengths to make it appear ok. They showcase clean, well lit, decorated facilities. They present the children engaged in art activities. It is almost like going to day camp, kids. Only you don’t get to go home at 5 o’clock.

Even among their most ardent supporters they know the idea of literally pulling children away from their mothers is repugnant. A tRump supporting female may have a bit of trouble swallowing the idea that what is being done is for the good of all of us — even the incarcerated children. So what do they do? They resort to something else quite familiar to these women — their faith. They pluck a bible quote to help soothe their pangs of guilt. That, of course, makes it okay. Even Jesus would approve, right?

WRONG! I was once a part of that faith but have since abandoned it for many reasons. But I have not forgotten the basic tenets of the faith which were instilled in me from birth. And aside from some glaring conflicts enshrined in their holy book, the one most often associated with Jesus was a concept called LOVE. It pretty much boiled down to love your neighbor as yourself. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Not too hard to understand. Even a child gets it.

So these evil bastards are so determined to have their way, they are even willing to use a person’s faith, to turn it inside out, to bamboozle their supporters to believe that not only is it okay to take the children, it is BIBLICAL. It is at times like these that I truly wished I believed in hell. For if anyone deserves to rot there it is tRump, Sessions and all the rest of the vicious people who have taken over our government. Mueller’s investigation and report can’t come soon enough for me. I hope that when it does, this long nightmare will end. If it doesn’t, I fear our nation will see its final demise shortly.
