(28,270 posts)On this Father's day, I weep for the children snatched from their parents, alone among strangers that don't even speak their language, locked up in terror in Trump's gulag.

(1,474 posts)Anyone not horrified by trump-Nazi tactics... I cannot express enough contempt for. I am not speechless, but I curse way too much anyway. Still, what the FUCK is happening to our country and what the FUCK is wrong with people that would support this? NeoNazi Americans.

(8,066 posts)Of course, the children being separated from their families today aren't being sent to gas chambers, not yet anyway.
On the other hand, the photo of that child (most likely Jewish) being led away at gun point by a German soldier wasn't widely circulated in the German press of the time. Unless I'm wrong (which is always a very strong possibility) that photo didn't get wide circulation until after the war, not among ordinary Germans anyway.
So in a way, we're being tested as Germans of the time weren't. They could (and generally did) plead ignorance when confronted with the atrocities committed in their name by their government. They could also say, with some justification, that to openly oppose the policies of Hitler and the Nazis risked imprisonment or even death.
We have no such excuses, none whatsoever. The atrocities now being committed in our name by our government are out in the open for everyone--including the American public--to see. And we have ways to confront these atrocities not available to ordinary Germans in 1933-45: a relatively free press, a relatively independent (for now, anyway) judiciary, a right to assembly, and a right to vote for an alternative this coming November and thus register our outrage in a meaningful way--even if the coming elections will no doubt be compromised by voter suppression, Russian hacking, and corporate media playing their usual "all sides do it" horse race BS.
We as a people are being tested. How we respond to this testing will mark us, for good or ill, for all time.
GOTV! Everything we value is now at stake.
