The Maine senator also says Trump's border wall should be part of any immigration solution.

Like many Republicans, Collins has occasionally offered criticism of Trump despite continuing to support his agenda. According to FiveThirtyEights Trump Score, Collins has voted with Trump 80.8 percent of the time, which ranks between Sen. Mike Lees (R-UT) 82.2 percent and Sen. Rand Pauls (R-KY) 74.3 percent.
While outrage continues to mount over Trumps family separation policy, Collins recently wrote a letter to constituents that attempted to justify it:

Then, Collins doubled down during an appearance Sunday on CBS Face the Nation. Although she acknowledged that family separation is traumatizing, Collins declined to support a bipartisan effort to end the cruel practice, and even suggested that Trumps border wall be included in any immigration solution:

Even the presidents own wife cant embrace some of the hardline positions endorsed by Trump and Collins. Ignoring her husbands role in creating the new zero tolerance policy, First Lady Melania Trump issued a statement Sunday calling for a bipartisan solution to the immigration crisis, adding that she hates to see children separated from their families.

Ive tried to read up a bit on the Feinstein bill, and it doesnt seem particularly broad to me. Anyway, @SenatorCollins could suggest a narrower bill. But saying youd like to see a comprehensive solution is saying that, for now, youre fine with doing nothing.

(32,025 posts)She won the seat of her former boss William Cohen, a northeastern "Rockefeller Republican" who had served in Congress (first the House then Senate) since the '70s.
Also, Collins benefits from serving a small state where she can easily meet face to face with constituents. Same applies to other "small state" senators like Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy in neighboring Vermont. Yet as the Republican Party has changed over the years, Collins has had to change with the times too.
