NY-24: Democrats view Juanita Perez Williams as best chance to defeat Katko

Democratic primary voters view Juanita Perez Williams as having a better chance than rival Dana Balter to defeat Rep. John Katko in the November election, according to new details of a Spectrum News/Siena College poll.

About 40 percent of likely Democratic primary voters say Perez Williams gives the party its best shot of winning the 24th Congressional District seat, compared to 26 percent who say Balter is more likely to beat Katko, the poll found.

The information provides new insight into the poll released Wednesday that showed Perez Williams leading 45-32 percent over Balter among likely voters in the June 26 primary. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

The poll showed Balter, a first-time candidate, is likely held back by a lack of name recognition in the four-county Central New York district. About 58 percent of likely primary voters said they had not heard of Balter, or didn't have enough information to have an opinion about her.

About 29 percent said they had not heard of Perez Williams, a Syracuse lawyer who ran unsuccessfully for mayor last year, or didn't have enough information to have an opinion.
