Ex-CIA Chief Doubles Down on Comparing Trump Immigration Policy to Nazi Germany: ‘We Need to Be Careful’

Retired General Michael Hayden knew that he’d cause a stir Saturday by tweeting out a picture of Auschwitz and making a note about the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy of separating families at the border.

“I wanted to grab people’s attention,” he said. “I didn’t choose that picture at random. I’ve been to that camp actually several times, John… That’s why I used that picture. That’s the scene where families were separated.”

“Look, I know we’re not Nazi Germany, all right? But there is a commonality there and a fear on my part that we have standards we have to live up to,” he added. “I’ve lived in Germany for three years,” he explained later. “A more civilized people you could not find. I was trying to point out we need be careful not to move in that direction.”

In a similar vein, General Hayden tweeted out the same photo a little later on Saturday warning that “civilized behavior is [not] guaranteed.”
