White House Thinks They Have a 'History' Problem

June 18, 2018 at 9:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

President Trump “will attend a meeting of the House Republican conference Tuesday night, and immigration is likely to be one of the topics on the agenda, said Marc Short, the president’s legislative affairs chief, in an interview Sunday,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Short: “The policy is incredibly complicated and it is one we need to do a better job of communicating. We’ve not talked about the history of how we got to this point.”

Playbook: “Explaining why the government is separating families at the border isn’t likely to make the policy more popular.”

5. Actually they are going to shift to saying that it's a good policy

And that it will deter illegal immigration.

I bet they pivot to taking credit for separating children from parents instead.

That they’re proud of doing this is telling. Not only is the policy bad, the optics of enforcement are bad and it’s in Republicans blind spot.

2. Mysteriously, the problem with republican policies is always that they are not properly communicated

The problem is never that the policy is bad.
The problem is always that people don't understand it.

"Just have to sell it better."

Trump is the ultimate salesman in a cheap suit, hawking shit at premium prices.

Get the story straight. Place the blame just right.

It's not them or their actions, it's that people simply don't understand the problem.

Fuckers.

7. History is that REFUGEES are LEGAL crossers.

Large numbers especially of these lone mothers bringing children are refugees. Like the mother forced to run to save her only remaining son after his two older brothers were murdered.

HERE is how refugee law basically works:

Under the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 protocol, and adopted into U.S. law, the U.S. must recognize refugees who fear persecution and are not able to get help from their home country.

Anyone who declares they are seeking asylum at a U.S. port of entry is then moved to undergo a secondary interview, during which another customs official must confirm the credible fear claim.

The asylum seeker is placed in a holding area before being transferred to a separate detention facility under Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, while he or she awaits a hearing with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services called adjudication.

Adjudicators, who are often judges, decide if the person is allowed to stay in the United States under refugee status.

Under this law, there are limits to how long children can be held, which has always effectively translated to a limit to how long a parent can be held. Also, children have legal rights under this law. So, of course, the position of evildoers is to call them criminals, not refugees.
