I'm in a Facebook argument with my right wing cousin

who is trying to justify the caging of kids. First he posted one of those RW memes about if you don't want your kids jailed, don't break the law, then I responded that seeking asylum is not breaking the law;

", for the umteenth and one time, they are playing the system. If the socialist liberals want to fix it, they can cut a deal with Trump tomorrow. BTW, those "kids" are treated better than our own homeless."

"Now, you know these people do not come back for their immigration hearings. The system is completely broken and it's time to bring it to a head. Trump is going to force the issue."

He simply will not admit it's inhumane, he will not admit Trump is using them for leverage to get his damn wall. I think I'm wasting my time. This is a pretty intelligent guy who referees basketball games and works the Special Olympics events, so there's a heart in there someplace...

But this situation is different. I’m concerned with media consolidation we are at a critical point and should use every opportunity to engage.

I’d tell them why I don’t support this policy, and remind him that without immigrants the US will have much higher prices. US workers dont do most agriculture jobs. Farms without workers doesn’t work. Meat packers, restaraunt kitchen workers, all over.

I’d ask him what it is about immigration that he doesn’t accept and tell him when he says they come here and get welfare that a. They can’t get benefits but they do pay into social security, and b. Here’s the tiny sliver of our budget that goes to welfare and the hugs half a pie that goes to military spending and contracts that enrich the richest.

I’d make the case for publicly financed elections since the politicians don’t work for the people any more.

I’d look for the values we can agree on.

I don’t think we can afford to cut ties and walk, family or not, but especially family.

I am advocating not carrying on a public disagreement on the pages of Facebook that will likely end badly. Have all the discussions you or anyone else wants to have with whomever they choose to, but disagreements on such a public forum will in most cases not change a single mind and may lead to a loss of communication with that member of the family.

You'll never win a political argument with them because they bask in the attention they are getting at that moment .

Let him cling to his excuses, he's chosen to stand with some of the worst events in recorded history. He's chosen to align himself with those who are universally condemned for what they did to children.

Start with the Romans, separating children of vanquished nations to be sold into slavery, a practice that also was adapted by slave traders who preyed upon Africans. The Nazis separated parents from children in concentration camps. Australia rounded up aboriginal children and forcibly reeducated them to wipe out their cultural identity. America and Canada practiced the similar policies, taking children away from native American people and warehousing them in boarding schools.

The Catholic church and other Christian sects, routinely took children from their mothers in an adoption scam to sell the kids to new parents, or provide a steady source of free labor to work at their businesses or to be hired out to factories and mines. The US govt snatched up Japanese children during WWII when their parents were arrested or deported or interned. Children have also been taken away from disabled parents or parents with Down's Syndrome, even though they were proven capable of caring for their kids. The US government also took kids with disabilities away from their parents and institutionalized them, under eugenics laws, forcing them to undergo sterilization.

Your right wing cousin he will be condemned, a immoral pariah, along with all the others who defended the same atrocities against children in the past. Congratulate him for having the chutzpah to aspire to emulate the monsters of history's darkest episodes where no good men would dare to go.

Ask them why they assume that is the case for every person involved. Why do they assume that? Because that is what they would do? What would Right-Winger do if he lived in a violent area? Would he stay there with his children, or leave them behind while he looked for a better place? Or if he just lived in a poor area, is he telling us he would game the system, and so that is why he assumes others are?

If not, than don't be a hypocrite. It cuts both ways. Someday your people will take control again and put us back on the path to the degradation of America. Until then, sit back and enjoy the ride!"

You are pretty much wasting your breath and your time. If you have given it your best shot and you made all of your points and didn’t resort to name calling and other things that guarantee you won’t get heard, it is time to step away from the debate. Make one last attempt — if you feel you must — and then bow out. It is bad on your nerves and terrible for you mentally. I know. I have been in the same situation, only it was live, face to face for me. It ended up in a shouting match and lots of hurt feelings. And it was with my adult son.

He is a good man. And usually has a tender heart. But it was about tRump and the Russians and he could not accept it is as bad as it is. We must remember that they have been brain washed, subjected to a lot of propaganda. Plus, they just do not want to accept what is clearly happening in the US. It is too frightening so they just deny that it happened and continues. It is the same with the children being taken from their parents. They rationalize it to make it okay because that is what the propagandist tell them over and over.

For your own well being, have your final say and then leave it. Unless you have the power to overcome the propaganda message, you will not ever dissuade him of the things he firmly believes. Sadly, they will need to have an object lesson to learn. Like when they come after him. Then he might get it.

It's a game for geniuses and fools only. Geniuses can actually do it every once and again. Fools pretend to themselves they can do it.

Ten out of eleven people will tell us they'll gladly change their minds when presented with valid evidence supporting that change. And all ten of them are lying.

We're comforted far too much by our precious biases to allow additional perspectives, and we're much more passionate about what we hate than what we love.

Read any message board on the planet. There's the evidence.
