Dozens killed in suspected Boko Haram attack in Nigeria

At least 31 people have been killed in a twin suicide bomb attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters on a town in northeast Nigeria, according to local sources.

Two blasts ripped through the Damboa government area in Borno state on Saturday evening targeting people returning from celebrating the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Following the suicide bombings, the attackers fired rocket-propelled grenades into the crowds that had gathered at the scene of the blasts, driving the number of casualties higher.

"There were two suicide attacks and rocket-propelled grenade explosions in Damboa last night which killed 31 people and left several others injured," Babakura Kola, from the Civilian Joint Task Force, a militia assisting the military with security, told AFP news agency on Sunday.

He was doing some work in Abuja and Kano and other Hausa parts of Nigeria, where Boko Haram hangs out. He doesn't speak Hausa, but he does speak Arabic. Still I doubt that alone would save him from a nasty fate if they get their hands on him. He may not have European facial features, but he does have American I.D.

Development work, sort of social work for politicians, very theoretical stuff to help the various societies advance--exactly what Boko Haram does NOT want. His next posting could be anywhere. Cambodia, Ecuador, he has no idea yet. Back to Africa is certainly another possibility.

In law school, instead of some comfortable law clerking position all law students look for during their summer breaks, my daughter opted for the U.N. War Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone. Got some horrible infection and nearly died, then recovered, and returned pronouncing Africa as "cool." Sometimes I'm amazed that either of them are still walking around.
