A sign asking customers at a Dunkin Donuts store in Baltimore to report employees who were heard not speaking English has set off a controversy.
The sign, according to the Baltimore Sun, would offer coupons to customers who reported workers at a doughnut store on West 41st Street if they were heard yelling in foreign languages.
Views of the sign were posted on Twitter. It read, If you hear any of our staff SHOUTING in a language other than ENGLISH Please call 443-415-7775 immediately with the name of the employee to receive a coupon for FREE Coffee and a pastry.
The sign was spotted Monday at the store and has apparently since been removed after it went viral on social media, according to the Sun and other media outlets.
Dunkin Donuts told the Sun in a statement that the stores general manager put it up based on her own personal judgment to deal with a customer service and satisfaction issue.
[Millions of U.S. citizens dont speak English to one another. Thats not a problem.]
Would they report Melania for speaking Slovenian to her parents? How about the many Jewish people in the north side speaking Hebrew and Yiddish? How about the Greeks? We've already had a US Vice President from Baltimore who spoke Greek.
My grandparents were disappointed when I was a kid I chose to only speak English and tried to be as "American" as possible. It's because of garbage like this.

(2,396 posts)It's okay if they're shouting in English? Why is shouting even involved?
ETA:. I would be damn proud if I was able to speak a second language, even at a basic level.

It can be hard to hear in a busy noisy restaurant sometimes when there are people talking and machines making noise.

(2,396 posts)At any rate, I thought Dunkin Donuts was kind of tepid in their response.

It was taken to the state's Human Relations Commission, which eventually ruled that he had a first amendment right to put that bullshit there because he (his staff obviously) purportedly never refused service to anyone not speaking English.
It was eventually taken down by his son in 2016 after 10 years. Vento's grandparents were off the boat Italians.

(9,893 posts)Grandparents were treated with just that sort of racism. Now he figures it's his turn. It was ever thus.

(129,096 posts)his grandparents had to learn to speak (whatever halting) English but he leaves out that obviously his parents were the translators for them.
Sadly there are many immigrants who come here who are crab-in-the-barrel folks who want to impose some overly-strict set of rules on subsequent immigrants. It's been an American "tradition". Meanwhile if one travels around the world, they will find many who are multilingual - particularly those who live near borders of neighboring countries and/or who live in areas where multiple ethnic groups (who speak different languages/dialects) happen to congregate or pass through.
There is a standard "joke" that says -
A. "Trilingual"
Q. What do you call someone who speaks two languages?
A. "Bilingual"
Q. What do you call someone who speaks one language?
A. "American".

(4,520 posts)She continually has to deal with English speaking only employees complaining about the ones who speak other languages. The complaints aren't about work time, no they are pissed off because they are "forced" to listen during break times. 1 employees quit in the past year - he said he wouldn't take orders from a "wet back", another was fired after being repeatedly warned not to threaten STUDENTS speaking a language other than English.

(42,759 posts)There would be a line for coupons. Sometimes I converse in Spanish myself.
There is nothing wrong with people making sure others understand them.
