What woke the Republicans up?

Seriiously. Suddenly there's an avalanche of disapproving remarks from Congress about separating children from their parents. It's amazing. Yesterday, just a trickle -- Cruz, and then later in the day Murkowski. Collins was in there too somewhere. Now suddenly it seems everyone's on board.

This is simply one they can't sell or ignore.

I hope you don't truly believe they are awake because of this one single instance.

Republican officeholders can be remarkably impervious to public comments, especially if they sense that expressions of dismay don't have any staying power. The outrage over busting up families, however, is pretty genuine and isn't something that can be waved away. Their sense of political self-preservation may have been triggered, and even their wealthy bankrollers are going to have trouble persuading people that these gestapo torture tactics are no big deal.

They allow a few "dissenters" for political reasons here and there especially during election years.

...predicated on absolute obedience to Big Money while pandering to the haters of women and minorities. One subset of haters, the religious conservatives, gives heavy lip service to caring about children.

The machine chugs along quite efficiently as long as their policies don't appear too cruel. A PR debacle like the family separations, though, has triggered panic among those officials who would still like to be reelected. It's the religious objections to child torture that have them in an uproar.

Republicans realized this because the polls told them so.

Not that they have a brain or a heart or a speck of morality between the lot of them.
You still don't see them do anything to actually free these kids.
Such useless/heartless fucks.
