If a service dog without a person approaches you, it means the person is down and in need of help.

I know Mastifs look that way all the time. They're such gentle giants.

(18,672 posts)And also why people who are not disabled and buy a pretend service dog vest so they can bring their dog into establishments need to stop doing this. It desensitizes people to real service dogs as their dogs are not usually trained or well-behaved. This may explain why the dog was ignored.

(4,940 posts)Four adults in a Jeep. Lots of trails around, off Ballaine Road and Goldstream. A service dog was on the path (well-maintained, well-used) without his person.
Pulled off at the edge of the pond, asked doggie where his person was - barking barking barking, almost ran back across the 2-lane, friend who is a dog-person said "WAIT" (cars coming). He did. We followed.
His person's BP was way way up (nurse with us said so) and had fallen on new ice (late November) and his prosthetic was dislodged.
It was 28 below zero. We hit 911 (in a reception area, thankfully), did what my favorite Shelley Nurse (I tease her a lot) said to do for the guy, and the pup? Would not even accept a blanket.
EMS got there quick - really different for the area - and pup hopped in the rescue truck with him.
Both are now fine.
ONE HELL OF A FINE, GOOD DOG!

(11,114 posts)Are service dogs trained to lead you back to their person in need of help?

(70,261 posts)i had never thought about this. good advice from the interwebs. fancy that.
but i also post this to make a point about actual service dogs. THIS is the kind of thing that marks an actual service dog from a comfort dog, or you mutt in a vest.
this dog was trained to go get someone. can your mutt in a vest do that? just that, which is a small part of what this dog is trained to do?
you arent allowed to interrogate a person w a mutt in a vest, or make them show you their doctor's note. you can, however, ask what tasks the dog has been trained to do. if it is- hop up on the couch when i look sad, you are legally allowed to treat that dog like any other dog. no ada protection.
and if that dog isnt sitting quietly next to their person while you chat, that is def a mutt in a vest, attached to an asshole. feel free to treat THEM like you would any other asshole trying to pull a con on you.
