Racial Fear Is Key to Trump's Support Among Evangelicals

https://politicalwire.com/2018/06/20/racial-fear-is-key-to-trumps-support-among-evangelicals/

"SNIP..........

Janelle Wong: “My research indicates white evangelical conservatism correlates strongly with their perceptions anti-white discrimination, even after taking into account economic status, party, age and region. Fully 50 percent of white evangelical respondents to our 2016 survey reported feeling they face discrimination that’s comparable to, or even higher than, the discrimination they believe Muslim Americans face. Those who hold this perception are more likely to hold conservative attitudes on issues as wide-ranging as climate change, tax policy and health-care reform.”

“Here’s what is not behind these beliefs: economic anxiety. Like PRRI and political scientist Diana Mutz, I find economic anxiety isn’t a primary reason for supporting Trump. Rather, white evangelicals fear losing racial status. White evangelicals’ perceptions they’re the targets of discrimination – more so than other groups — influence far more than simply their votes for Trump.”

“Yes, 80 percent of white evangelicals supported Donald Trump in 2016. And the racial fears and anxieties that underlie their support for the president will probably remain the driver in their political views long after he leaves office.”

visiting the DU because they heard Trump wants to get rid of Medicare and they are slammed with wypipo which plays into that well entrenched GOP conspiracy theory that white people are the real victims of racism. We want people to vote their own economic issues not their hate. I'm not saying we lay down a welcome mat. I'm saying we should be clear about what we are about.

and I usually agree with what you post. Tacking the silly wypipo thing onto this is really irrelevant.

Evangelicals don't read DU. This is a liberal silo, and they write in conservative silos, and the two never meet.

No one is talking about wypipo anymore. That kerfluffle is no more.

I agree that every vote counts, and I would also say that the truism holds that elections are won in the middle. Speak to persuade. You won't get the fringe crazies, but we might pull in those that are willing to listen to .... reason. Remember reason? We don't have to peal off that many to win.

not having contact with rw whiteevangelical trumpers. First of all they clutch their purses or pant check thier wallet with in 5 feet and do not want them near thier church so there is not going to be a lot of people the type using wypipo pissing off evangelicals anymore than they already do just for being alive and breathing. I really don't think the paths cross for it to be an issue so why the want to silence a word that is sort of
unrelated to the OP. This article linked did not occur because some folk among them selves used it and evangelicals are not new at this .
If you think they hate gays because gay people call a certain type of straight person a breeder I am not surprised but evangelicals hate gays regardless of if they have heard the gay term breeders or not just because they are alive and gay
Same with wypipo IMO

I was an Evangelical all through college though at one point, I noticed in the paper that the Reagan admin was changing college financial aid from mostly grants to mostly loans.

Then I got a job as a fisherman in Alaska, but we didn't fish because of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. We cleaned oil off of rocks instead. One day, a Coast Guard helicopter landed with their equivalent of an admiral and some greasy looking Exxon exec.

The Exxon exec was the one who told us we had cleaned that particular beach enough, and the admiral was "yes, sir"-ing him a lot.

As someone with both a military background and a Pacific Northwest appreciation for nature, that pushed me across the line to becoming a Democrat.

it is tax cuts and slashing good programs. In canada we have the government pay 2/3 of our university education and they are all state schools. Indigenous students go for free. Nobody pays more than 20,000 a year. Foreign students pay less than 30,000. We get alot of American foreign students. Good schools too. Some are impossible to get into if your average is not above 90.

I say this as a white person.

Too many times I see white people stop reading and stop communicating once they see the words "white people".

Every white person needs to read this.

It's a description of white people who refuse to acknowledge that racism exists.

It's a description of some white people who have to enter every conversation on racial discrimination with the proclamation of "Not me!" or "Not all white people!" thereby shutting down the conversation entirely.

Thats the reason for the backlash against Obama, The Tea Party,

They fear being a minority in America.

Once data started coming out that whites were going to be a minority in a number of years, then a black man became president. All hell broke loose. All the undercover racists started showing their colors. Oh no we can't have that. We have to keep our blood pure for as long as we can. Keep the muslims and Mexicans out, lock up more blacks, hell, kill more of em.

Look, we know damn well if these immigrants were from Norway, hell if they were Russian. immigrants escaping Putin, despite drugs being a huge problem in Russia, I bet they would be welcomed with open arms. These immigrants are just the wrong color.

I'm not going to appease racists feelings either though so I don't care if they are offended by the use of wypipo
