By Phil Mattingly and Greg Stohr
Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham, accused Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of lying by saying Mitt Romney hasnt paid taxes for 10 years.
Graham today said Reid was making things up, and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called Reid a dirty liar for leveling the accusations against Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
I just cannot believe that the majority leader of the United States would take the floor twice, make accusations that are absolutely unfounded in my view and, quite frankly, making things up to divert the campaign away from the real issues, Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said today on CNNs State of the Union.
Republicans and Democrats spent much of the Sunday talk shows sparring over Reids claims about Romneys taxes -- accusations the former Massachusetts governor has denied. Democratic President Barack Obamas advisers and supporters have pressed Romney to release his tax returns in the wake of Reids claims. Romney, who has released one year of personal income tax returns and has promised a second, has challenged Reid to put up or shut up and reveal his source for the claim.

How is it that these Republicans are certain Reid is "lying"?
Have Graham and other Republicans seen Romney's tax returns?
Is Romney passing his returns around in secret to Republicans, including RNC Chair Reince Priebus?
Why isn't Mitt sharing these with the American people?
Do Republicans know Reid's source?
Do they know definitively that the sources doesn't have credible evidence?
Graham and other Republicans are accusing Reid of lying about tax returns they haven't seen and a source they know nothing about.
Instead of accusing Reid of "lying," they should be challenging Romney to release his returns.

(25,270 posts)lying? Sir (and I use this term loosely for these Repugs) - if you say Senator Reid is lying - how do you know - have you seen Rmoney's tax returns?
Seems to me that this would be a good way to shut them up. If they haven't seen Rmoney's tax returns - then the follow up is "Well Sir - then how could you say Sen Reid is lying?"
If they have seen his returns - then the follow-up is "Well if you are entitled to see Rmoney's tax returns - shouldn't the American People be afforded the same?"
For God's sake - you so-called journalists - do you job.

(129,440 posts)Reid has been in Congress since 1983 (and a Senator since 1987).
Graham has been in Congress since 1995 (and a Senator since 2003).
He needs to get a clue, quit with the Strom Thurmond-lite routine, and STFU. No more stone-walling. Release the tax returns!

(39 posts)Extraordinary claims requires extraordinary evidence. They should have just dismissed Reid's words. They are meaningless without evidence. By calling him a liar, they just extended the news cycle. It's nice to see the GOP having to deal with a toothless nonstory for a change.

(116,464 posts)"Extraordinary claims requires extraordinary evidence. They should have just dismissed Reid's words."
...couldn't because this isn't about Reid, and they know it. Reid doesn't have to do jack, but keep talking. Romney has to come clean to the American people.
"By calling him a liar, they just extended the news cycle."
There goal was to co-opt the news cycle with outrageous name-calling, but it still isn't about Reid.
"It's nice to see the GOP having to deal with a toothless nonstory for a change. "
"Toothless"? This story has legs, and Romney and Republicans are reacting in very desperate ways.

(39 posts)Imagine if Boehner said he'd heard from a former classmate from Obama's days in his Madrassa, who said that Obama told him they were moving to America and had to pretend they were Christian. We'd all scoff at the use of an anonymous source. Not the best comparison, admittedly but you can't cite anonymous sources and call it evidence. I don't doubt Romney's hiding disastrous information about his taxes, but Reid's words could have been dismissed in my opinion. The story is Romney's failure to release.
ProSense
(116,464 posts)...it's not the best comparison.
Let's go with the far-fetched: Democrats would not panic over such a claim by Boehner.
Right now Republicans are in a panic. Why?
They need to discredit Reid because they have no idea what he really knows.
Genghis_Sean
(39 posts)Good point. They wouldn't panic or leap to quash it if they didn't fear it was true.

(23,973 posts)They were blind-sided by Harry Reid and caught completely flat-footed, and now all they got is yelling "Liar!" like a sixth-grader accused of liking girls.
Notice how Harry Reid is ignoring them.
I can't wait for the next installment of this drama.
It will certainly be along the lines of, "Well, if I'm a liar, Mitt can easily prove it! Show the tax returns! And those of you accusing me of lying, just how do you know otherwise? Have YOU seen Mitt's invisible tax returns, and aren't telling?".
The Republicans are willingly running willy-nilly directly into a trap.

(92,394 posts)me. What is he afraid of? In fact Harry Reid indicated it was from a source at bain. Is the source lying? I don't know. One way to show is for romney to release his tax returns. Oh, I already said that, didn't mean to repeat myself.
Based on the republican and romney record I tend to believe it is the republicans and romney who are lying
prove them wrong

(14,177 posts)He is trying so hard to shed his RINO image. First he eats his hate sandwich, which didn't do anything at all to make him look more manly, opposite as a matter of fact. Now, this he is defending Mitt Romney even though most Republicans actually hate him and called Romney a RINO. This is so surreal. Republicans defending a RINO.

(73 posts)Romney doesn't recall how much taxes hes paid, Gram if he was to say anything else would be called a liar by his own party and would just walk back his statement ,the true problem with all of this is that they have a platform in which to speak from and the right and left M.S.M is only interested in which side of the statement receives the most ratings So in a nut shell which its all about ratings advertising our M.S.M CONSIST OF 1 % ER'S

(23,272 posts)I'm thinking that's how Reid knows this. He knows someone who knows the truth.
The Mormon community is known for sticking together and enriching each other. I'm guessing the same high level tax attorneys that do Reid's taxes, also do Rmoneys.

Although there's another 2-word phrase that I often utter when I hear Republicans speak that might be fitting in this instance as well. It's a euphemism for procreation, which we all know Republicans support.
