A Topeka-based group-home facility for troubled youths has been identified as a landing spot for immigrant children who have been separated from their families at the U.S. southern border, making it the only known facility to be housing the children in either Kansas and Missouri and perhaps in the entire central states area, according to published reports.
In an editorial published Wednesday by the Kansas City Star, it was revealed children in their teens and perhaps as young as 6 years old are being housed at the Villages location on the west outskirts of Topeka. Meanwhile, the childrens parents are reported to be held at separate federal facilities.
Officials on Thursday morning confirmed to The Topeka Capital-Journal that immigrant children are being housed at the Villages, and that the youths are in federal custody.
