For obvious reasons, the broadly liberal demographic trends in American politics have received much less attention since the 2016 election. Yet the fact remains that America is politically sorted by generations in a way it never has before. The oldest voters are the most conservative, white, and Republican, and the youngest voters the most liberal, racially diverse, and Democratic. There is absolutely no sign the dynamic is abating during the Trump years. If anything, it is accelerating.
The most recent Pew Research Survey has more detail about the generational divide. It shows that the old saw that young people would naturally grow more conservative as they age, or that their Democratic loyalties were an idiosyncratic response to Barack Obamas unique personal appeal, has not held. Younger voters have distinctly more liberal views than older voters:

(21,176 posts)When I got out of college I actually was more conservative. If you work hard youll get ahead, gays are bad and we must defer to authority. Now as I get older 40 years later, I have become more compassionate, and knowledgeable that I really know jack shit.
I get further and further to the left as I get older.
I think I've not only grown more liberal, I've found less and less common ground on any issue with Republicans.

(8,636 posts)I actually had a sort of flirtation with conservatism and libertarianism when I was younger. You know, sort of like the 'ex-girlfriend from Hell!' meme.
Edit to add: That old saw about people becoming more conservative with age is really based on the idea that a person 'of a certain age' would want to protect what they've gained. Tell that to people who've been laid off multiple times, had jobs outsourced and are nearing retirement with few resources.

(30,481 posts)I grew up in a right leaning family, joined the army, and combat pushed me hard left. I had kids a few years later, and that experience pushed me further left.
The older I get, the more left I go.

I think it might just save the planet, if we can get beyond our primitive tribalism and think globally and long-term.
