LEHI, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MyHeritage, the leading international family history and DNA company, announced today that, following the recent separation of children from parents in immigrant families in the United States, the company is expanding its pro bono initiative, DNA Quest which helps reunite adoptees with their biological families through DNA testing to help those parents who were detained at the border reunite with their children. The company is pledging 5,000 additional free DNA tests for separated parents and children who are interested in this opportunity.
For the DNA kits to reach the affected people, MyHeritage has begun contacting relevant government agencies and NGOs that are able to provide assistance with distribution of the DNA kits to parents in detainment facilities and to their children placed in temporary custody. MyHeritage is also calling the public to assist anyone who can help with the distribution of the DNA kits and is in touch with the separated families is requested to contact dnaquestsupport@myheritage.com. The DNA results will be processed by MyHeritage and not shared with any third parties.

(1,895 posts)Using DNA to reunite families would be a good idea only IF there were no attempt to patent or otherwise own the children or their family members DNA material
"A biopsy sample taken from a Candian woman, Snezana Piljak, seeking treatment for colon cancer was deemed the personal property of the hospital that performed the biopsy, not the woman herself, making it the first Canadian ruling about who owns tissue samples. The woman died and her estate sued her physicians for not diagnosing the disease earlier. Those physicians then sued the hospital that had taken the biopsy for not sharing the tissue sample."

(6,324 posts)Unless they put into law a policy that all minors coming over are tested. And in all honesty a DNA test to ensure family connections claimed are legitimate would probably be a good idea just from the standpoint of protecting the kids from traffickers.

The Mormon angle is interesting; I have the vague idea that a fair number of Central Americans may be Mormon. Am I nuts?
