Donald Trump is an expert in crime statistics: money to silence porn stars, illegal Russian contacts and a jailed campaign manager.

(12,858 posts)gives unexpected insight.
I wasn't trying to correct your translation.
Literal translation from German has taught me a lot about meaning of English words.
For example, Mitleid is translated as compassion. Mit (preposition) means 'with' and Leid (noun) means
'suffer'. So Mitleid literally is 'suffer with'. Etymology of 'compassion' shows Latin com 'with' and Latin passion 'suffering'. So compassion is literally 'suffer with'. Then I checked empathy. That is from Greek. Em means 'with' and pathy is 'suffer'. So compassion and empathy each mean 'suffer with'!! [No one in Trump gang 'suffers with' anyone outside their very narrow circle. No compassion or empathy for anyone else!!]
This led me to looking up etymology of companion. Latin com is 'with' and Latin panion comes from word meaning 'bread'. So a companion is 'someone you share bread with'. And conspire is 'to breathe (spire fron Latin word for breathe) with'.
Language is endlessly fascinating!!

(22,380 posts)Schweigegeld: The best translation would be "get money for keeping mum."

(10,011 posts)I havent seen this elsewhere, but Huffington Post had an article yesterday about Trumps work with the right-wing anti-immigration grouos to get rid of Merkel. That, of course, is exactly what his buddy Putin wantsmore destabilization of countries in the EU and weaker U.S. ties to traditional allies. Plus, Trump disliked Merkel because she is enormously smart and does not kowtow to him the way Teresa May does. I hope the German people are smart enough (unlike our own Trump supporters) to realize that Putins misinformation machine is behind all the negative information and Trump is doing what Putin wants. It would be interesting to know if these anti-immigration groups are being funded under the table by people like Putin and Trump connections.

.at us now. Eve if he didn't actually win the election, we're not yet in the streets everyday demonstrating to the world and each other that we care enough to actively address the calamity that has occurred.
We too will be condemned by history because we and most of our Democratic representatives are not yet doing and saying enough loudly enough.
Silence enables.

(11,564 posts)But I thought it would be in a more expected way. Crony capitalism, ridiculous ranting, tweaking-to-tearing at govt that would take a few years to fix and a small ocean of deplorable followers egging him on.
In my wildest dreams, I could never have imagined this. It is an utter disaster.
