Rex 84, short for Readiness Exercise 1984, was a classified scenario and drill developed by the United States federal government to detain large numbers of United States citizens deemed to be "national security threats", in the event that the President declared a "State of National Emergency". The plan was first revealed in detail in a major daily newspaper by reporter Alfonso Chardy in the July 5, 1987 edition of the Miami Herald. Possible reasons for such a roundup were reported to be widespread opposition to a U.S. military invasion abroad, such as if the United States were to directly invade Central America.[1][2][3] To combat what the government perceived as "subversive activities", the plan also authorized the military to direct ordered movements of civilian populations at state and regional levels, according to Professor Diana Reynolds.[4]

8. Because he's going to empty the detention centers and "reunite" families.

The military bases are set up to control large temporary operational centers with that many people at a moment's notice, and still keep pesky reporters and concerned citizens from finding out what's going on.

However, military personnel, for all their faults, are not like ICE or one of those Eric Prince emotionally loser mercenary groups - they're actually a wider representation of the American citizenry.
And military "jobs" don't depend on following unlawful orders - you can't just "fire" a soldier or sailor; the UCMJ actually encourages pointing out and refusing unlawful orders.
A lot of military personnel are sickened by ICE/Border Patrol and other contractor mercenaries with their "rent a cop" mentality, even if those people might have been former military.

They may have the war skilz, but no soul. And they're more likely to get their own people killed because of their arrogance and blind rah-rah patriotpattootism.

15. Think of Theresienstadt

The facility will be under the direct control of a private prison corporation who will hire mercs as guards!! ICE/CPB/HHS will be the only government entities with unfettered access.

The reason to pick a military base is so access can be controlled, the military controls access onto the base, private corrections will
be in control of access to the facility!!!

As a veteran I think the only place for mercenaries is hanging from a bridge and set on fire. In my opinion ICE is the new Gestapo, a third of the CPB is in business with the drug cartels, a third is in business with the human traffickers, and a third just don't want to rock the boat, and will look the other way!

HHS is headed by a pro-life advocate who believes that "The mission of HHS is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, and this includes the unborn.” While being against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and is looking forward to it being repealed completely!

9. I might be naive

But this might be a step in the right direction

I think our aim is to change from a separation/detention scenario to a more humane policy of keeping families together within a reasonably controlled environment.

Surplus military housing might be the closest thing that the government has to meeting that goal. Underutilized on-base housing could be re-purposed for that need better than tents.

14. The government contractors are jumping for joy

This is going to be another shit-show boondoggle for them, and that's all they care about.

Don't kid yourself that Trump wants to do anything to help the immigrants, who will all eventually be kicked out of the country anyway. There's no way these people will ever be allowed to get green cards, or jobs, or (gag!) vote in our country. Cheeto will let this play out just long enough so he can rake in millions in campaign donations from the government contractors. Then it will all be cancelled and we'll go back to Plan A (no plan).

He needs space for the internment camps. They're going to just put them in them together, rather than separately.

17. If we stop catch and release we are going to need much more than 20,000

People have no idea how many people are making asylum petitions:

As of March 2018 they had a backlog of 300,000 asylum petitions

https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/asylum-united-states

Overall, the asylum process can take years to conclude. In some cases, a person may file his or her application and receive a hearing or interview date years in the future.
•As of March 2018, there were more than 318,000 affirmative asylum applications pending with USCIS. The government does not estimate the time it will take to schedule an initial interview for these asylum applicants, though historically the delay could reach four years for such asylum seekers.

We are currently taking in about 125,000 refugees a year, but this is easily controlled because we choose from first asylum camps and can control the flow.

Asylum seekers apply directly with us and their numbers are outside of our control.

Twenty thousand beds is not a very large number if you are going to stop "catch and release" which moves asylum seekers into the system but releases them until their petition is adjudicated.

A better system, in my opinion, would be to allow asylum seekers to petition at US Embassies.

I know that we can absorb 500,000 refugees and asylum seekers a year (less than 2/10ths of one percent of our population).

The idea that there should be NO limit and no rational system for integration is, IMO, also irresponsible. It reminds me of when President Carter demonstrated with Deng Tso Peng about the incarceration of political prisoners in China. Deng listened to Carter and said "fine, do you want to take them?". Carter immediately answered "Yes". Deng said, "How many million do you want?". Carter never raised the issue again.

Here is the fact: When the US (under Obama) hit the gangs in the US hard and returned them to El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico and other countries south of the border we created war zones as gangs fight for control of their countries. Now innocent families are fleeing here to escape the violence.

We need to accept reasonable numbers of asylum seekers and invest in those countries so that we can help reduce the violence in those countries.
