Pierce: This Nation Is Beginning to Realize the Full Extent of What It Did to Itself in Nov 2016

This Nation Is Beginning to Realize the Full Extent of What It Did to Itself in November 2016
The country's head is clearing. The spell of the reality show presidency* is wearing off.
By Charles P. Pierce
Jun 22, 2018

snip//

You can feel the difference in the air. The members of the governing party, uneasy about the prospects for this year’s midterms anyway, are fairly trembling at the moment, seeing in their mind’s eyes a hundred 30-second spots of weeping toddlers behind chain-link walls. The president* has gone completely incoherent, standing firm until he doesn’t, looking for help in the Congress that he’ll never get, and reversing himself so swiftly on his one signature issue that he’s probably screwed himself up to the ankles in the floor of the Oval Office. By Friday afternoon, he was back on the electric Twitter machine, yapping about the Democrats and “their phony stories of sadness and grief.” And a hundred Republican candidates dive back behind the couch.

The country’s head is clearing. The country’s vision is coming back into focus and it can see for the first time the length and breadth of the damage it has done to itself. The country is hearing the voices that the cacophony of fear and anger had drowned out for almost three years. The spell, such as it was, and in most places, may be wearing off at last. The hallucinatory effect of a reality-show presidency* is dispersing like a foul, smoky mist over a muddy battlefield.

The migrant crisis is going to go down through history as one of the most destructive series of own-goals in the history of American politics. The establishment of the “zero-tolerance” policy made the child-nabbing inevitable. The president*’s own rhetoric—indeed, the raison d’etre of his entire campaign—trapped him into at first defending the indefensible and then abandoning what was perhaps the only consistent policy idea he ever had—outside of enriching himself and his family, that is. Then the cameras began to roll, and the nation’s gorge began to rise, and the president* couldn’t stand the pressure that was mounting around him. Of course, because he knows nothing about anything, including how to actually be president*, he bungled even his own abject surrender. He’s spent the days since signing his executive order railing against what he felt compelled to do and arguing against himself and losing anyway.

That’s the optimism, and it may, in fact, be illusory, but the power balance in our politics seemed to shift this week. Terrible policies are still coming from the various agencies. Scott Pruitt remains a grifter of nearly inhuman proportions, and a vandal besides. Neil Gorsuch continues to prove himself to be the reliable conservative hack for whom the Republicans stole a Supreme Court seat. But the crisis at the border is a leg-hold trap for all of them. There’s no way for them to keep faith with themselves and get out from under the humanitarian disaster they concocted. One day, maybe, brave Guatemalan mothers and their very brave children may be said to have saved the American Republic from slow-motion and giddy suicide. Some even may be our fellow citizens by then, and we should remember to thank them.

administration (one of the worst in the history of this country).

Never before have we had such a spoiled brat inhabit the Oval Office and witness all of his idiotic temper tantrums and mutterings, and provide such a fine example on how not to govern, 101.

What's worse too, is the idiotic coddling of this president by members of the president's own party in Congress.

None of these Congressional office holders has had the guts to stand up and say NO, except McCain and Flask. A vast majority of these cowards instead chose to retire early, and flee the sinking ship, instead of sticking around and providing the firm guidance that this country so sorely needs in the face of so much ignorance and hatred by rump.

Cowards.

His base has been so radically brainwashed by the right-wing media that 60% still support the separation of children from their parents. I can only hope that those who oppose this monstrosity show up at the polls to vote in 2018. I can assure you that the important block of Republican evangelicals, end-timers, gun nuts, racists, homophobes, misogynists and assortment of every kind of deplorable will be there.

We must convince the younger Americans that their heritage is in critical jeopardy. The very survival of the Constitution upon which the nation was created is under assault. It may be inconceivable to some to comprehend, but the President and his henchmen are not only destroying our alliances that are crucial to our survival, but that Trump is aligning himself with some of the most vicious and blood thirsty bastards in the entirety of the world. It has become so blatant that some are even contemplating that he is the Manchurian Candidate. I don't subscribe to this theory, but I am convinced that he is so mentally disturbed that he striving to establish a virtual dictatorship. He is exhibiting the same delusions that Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and a host of other madmen who believe that they were endowed with supreme knowledge to which everyone must be subservient. To compel obedience they became increasing ruthless and paranoid.

Have no doubt that the Republcians end game is the establishment of a Authoritarian Presidency that coupled with the oligarchs will be the sole authority. Trumps admiration for the dictatorships is not an aberration. It is what he aspires to become. He has surrounded himself with neo-cons who have been expounding the doctrine of the unlimited executive authority for over forty years. They view the separation of powers as a hindrance and have absolutely no respect for the concept of the separation of powers. This concept has been advance under various names, the most recent as during the Bush Administration in which it was called the Unified Executive Theory. It is just a code name for the same form of dictatorship that has emerged in Russia, China and gaining strength in Western Europe driven by ultra-nationalism.

Yesterday I heard a podcast where a former ambassador Michael McFaul said he wished he could tell the American people the whole truth about the Russian intrusion into Americans infrastructure. He was precluded from saying much because of classified national security issues.

Listen to Rachel Maddow's Jun 22, 2018 podcast. Last Friday night. Guest host Ari Melber. Listen to the last 10 minutes Ambassador Michael McFaul.

The really sad thing is to hear the the deplorables’ true selves come out in full “bloom”. To hear how unsympathetic, how utterly - incomprehensibly devoid of compassion they are. How hateful and hard-hearted they are toward the sound of those sobbing children. How unmoved they are to this.

The numerous references to “they want this” and worse, “they like this” - I’m just astonished. Flabbergasted. Can’t believe what I’m seeing and hearing from the MAGA crowd.

I simply can’t believe it. Shocked, stunned, and deeply disgusted. Shame on them all.

And I’ll bet they’re the first to profess how fervently they believe in Jesus.

Unfortunately they’re also likely to be the last to quote Matthew 25: 35-45 (the one about “whatever you do to the least of My brethren...” ). I’ve never heard a whiff of that out of any of them, or the televangelists they look up to.

In no way were the Trump people prepared to actually run a government. They are the dogs who finally caught the bus they’d been chasing for years. It was obvious to ANYONE (in their right mind) that electing Trump would bring a firestorm of criminality, authoritarianism, nationalism and self-promotion to the White House.

As for Pierce’s optimism, I don’t share it right now. But I’d be happy to have a change of leadership.

And I wholeheartedly endorse and agree with what he writes, now more than ever.

We attended J-School together in the early 70s. Post Watergate, Vietnam War era, to frame things for those of other generations. At the time, I saw a spark in him that so few other classmates could muster (including yours truly). Whether it was due to classmate rivalry, or chemical distractions (Wisconsin had just lowered the legal drinking age to 18, and cannabis was widely and cheaply available), I now regret not getting to know him better.

After graduation, we all pursued our various careers, but I always remembered how Charlie used to challenge our faculty, and even Dean George Reedy! That pattern of challenging the establishment — in true 70s fashion — continues.

Well done, Charlie! You have truly made an impact on our collective consciousness, and continue to do so! This article shows that yours and your parents’ investments in your higher education is continuing to reward our society in what may be the darkest hours of our nation. Many thanks

Stay strong, Charlie!! Speak the truth!

With the drawing of election districts as they please and putting judges in office that will never leave, it`s over. They will get what they want whenever they they want and we could not stop them. They will continue to steal elections and gain more power. Even if Mueller had proof that drump shot someone on fifth ave. they still would not impeach him. So yes I am praying that the people are sick of this but if we can`t turn this around this November, I don`t think there is a plan B.
