160 miles north of Omaha, crude oil leaks into floodwaters

By Rick Ruggles / World-Herald staff writer 4 hrs ago

DOON, Iowa — The Metropolitan Utilities District reported Friday that it was keeping an eye on a crude oil spill that occurred after a train derailment near this town about 155 miles north of Omaha.

The freight train derailed in northwest Iowa on Friday and leaked crude oil from at least one of 31 tankers into flooded fields flanking the tracks. This raised concern about possible contamination of residential water supplies.

MUD said that if necessary, it would shift water pumping away from the Florence Water Treatment Plant along the Missouri River to two treatment facilities supplied by the Platte River.

BNSF railroad spokesman Andy Williams said no one was injured when the cars derailed about 4:30 a.m.
