I remember that when Truman went back to Independence, Missouri, after his service, reporters asked what the first thing he did when he got home. "I took the suitcases up to the attic," was his practical reply.

Once Truman left the White House, his only income was his old army pension: $112.56 per month. At his death, his net worth was estimated to be less than $1 million.

The year after he left office, Congress passed the Former Presidents Act, guaranteeing the president a pension of $25,000 per annum.

Eisenhower didn't inherit money and was living on his military salary when the GOP approached him about running for president. He did own land, however, and his net worth at the end of his death was estimated to be $8 million.

Eisenhower was the last "non-politician" who ran for president until Donnie Two Scoops came along. Morally and professionally, the two men could not be any more different.
